ParticipantI suspect you know the story. Ryan. Christensen is th A’s bench coach. Been with the organization for 15 years. Home runs have become cause for dugout celebrations the last several years, often involving lineing up on both sides while the player dances through getting high fives . Well in the age of Covid they have had to improvise. So the A’s have a “karate chop” while the guy runs through. No contact.
Christensen screwed up. Instead of the chop he held his arm straight palm down. Did it twice.
Immeditely went viral. “Nazi salute” Christensen is now trying to save his job. Apologized and said he had no intent of doing a nazi salute. He just held his arm straight.
Hes been with the organization for 15 years One would think over that time frame, the players and organization would get a measure of the man. To their credit, the players have supported him. Without qualification.
But will that be enough? Here is a telling comment from ESPN Pablo Torres on the Dan Le Batard podcast: “Your intent when it comes to this stuff doesn’t matter. We make that mistake with racism and bigotry. It’s not what you intend, it’s how the people have the right to feel in response to seeing that given certain historical facts and conditions.”
This is an example one of the “three great untruths” in Haidt’s book “The Coddling of the American Mind – “Always trust your feelings”
Torres comment is chilling I’m sure there was no reply. I appreciate the listener may have a different take on what the speaker said based on various factors. But we are at a point where it’s commonplace to infer the worst. And “feelings ” are often wrong.
And of course all of this is exacerbated because there are people out there who are looking for anything to post on social media For the purpose of creating “ outrage”
The bottom line is people have the “right to feel” anyway they wish. That doesn’t mean, however, that actions should be taken against someone who innocently ruffled those feelings.

cardcrimsonParticipantGotta get upset about somethingSeems like a non-issue to me. . . .
“More from Ryan Christenson, who says after Hendriks told him, “No, no straight arm, you have to bend your arm,” he turned and said, “Oh, I see what you mean, oh no, it’s like ‘Heil Hitler,’ “ which Hendriks backs up. Christenson says, “I apologize for everything.””
From a blog quoting an article in the Chronicle.

Rocky17ParticipantToo stupid and insignificant to comment further. Maybe we should boycott Major League baseball in perpetuity as every one of my friends and acquaintances do with NBA basketball and seriously considering with NFL football. F `em big time.
If Walt and Roy Disney were still alive, Torres would be living on the street in downtown LA where he deserves to be. Whatever happened to Disney? Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck along with Minnie and Goofy will soon be wearing black masks and throwing fire bombs.
The only time I have watched ESPN over the last several years is when Stanford is playing football or Tara`s team is on.
