I personally don’t think the mandates are necessary. By 2035 most people will probably prefer to buy EVs with or without a mandate.

In Norway — a cold weather country not too dissimilar in weather from Minnesota —  adoption just hit about 90% of new sales.

EVs aren’t for everyone, but for the vast majority of people they will work just fine even with less range than a gas vehicle. And by 2035 the range issue will probably be moot or certainly mitigated significantly as battery technology and other efficiencies improve.

I agree with btd that EV’s are becoming the more attractive consumer item. I don’t think superiority of driver experience being in favor of ICE’s will last long.

I fear for the power grid. I can envision a day when EV’s are software programmed to only charge on certain days and to only give the driver a certain amount of charge by regulation.  Think water rationing. It will be easy with Tesla’s over the air update model.

It will be just one more little nick in the tree of freedom.

Other than extending the life of Diablo Canyon nuclear plant, does California have any more power plants on the design table to help comply with the mandates?

Ha, ha, ha.  Just kidding.  We all know the answer to that question.
