      Answer: it depends.  Depends on your gender, the age at which you have children, types of kids you have, country and region.

      Country with the biggest drop in happiness from pre-kids to having kids: The United States.

      Having kids may not make you happy, but it may make you fulfilled.  I think real, physical work is similar.  It may not make you happy while doing it, but the notion of having accomplished something is fulfilling.

      Having no kids is less complicated.  That, in and of itself, probably contributes to some notion of “happiness.”

      Yes, very happy.  Both as a parent and grandparent.
