      Old man rant here.

For the first four decades of life, 15% was the norm tip. Then, all of a sudden, it became 20%. And now, receipts “helpfully” are printed out with 20%, 25% and 30% “guidelines” for tipping.

Two of our favorite restaurants in Willow Glen are Round Table Pizza and Aqui. At both restaurants, you order your own food at a cash register, and pick up your own food. No wait staff involved.

At both restaurants, there are three opportunities to tip — who, exactly? You run your card, it asks if you want to leave a tip. The receipt you have to sign has space for a tip. And both restaurants leave cash “tip jars” by the register when you’re paying.

The zero tip movement is growing and restaurant workers are furious about it

And now, the backlash. 77% of adults say service quality is a major factor in deciding whether and how much to tip. And a pet peeve of mine is tipping before the service. And it is terrible or mediocre, every single time. Every. Single. Time.

63% of Americans hold at least one negative view about tipping. There is now a zero tip movement:

Little disagreement on this one. Life and high tech have treated me well, and I am quite concerned with the situation of gig workers. I overtip.extravaganttly and have for years, regardless of quality of service.

I also rate everyone five stars. I don’t like that style of management.

I wouldn't give you two cents for all your fancy rules if, behind them, they didn't have a little bit of plain, ordinary, everyday kindness - yeah, and a little looking out for the other fella, too.
