For the first four decades of life, 15% was the norm tip. Then, all of a sudden, it became 20%. And now, receipts “helpfully” are printed out with 20%, 25% and 30% “guidelines” for tipping.
Two of our favorite restaurants in Willow Glen are Round Table Pizza and Aqui. At both restaurants, you order your own food at a cash register, and pick up your own food. No wait staff involved.
At both restaurants, there are three opportunities to tip — who, exactly? You run your card, it asks if you want to leave a tip. The receipt you have to sign has space for a tip. And both restaurants leave cash “tip jars” by the register when you’re paying.

And now, the backlash. 77% of adults say service quality is a major factor in deciding whether and how much to tip. And a pet peeve of mine is tipping before the service. And it is terrible or mediocre, every single time. Every. Single. Time.
