This is Peter Zeihan on the future of the Democratic party. His expertise is international politics. He weighs in on economic issues, tangent as they are to politics, but he is not particularly strong there.

He is, however, strong on politics. This is a seven-minute video on the Democrats’ future, or rather lack thereof.

Why Do the Democrats Keep Losing Ground? || Peter Zeihan

If you don’t want to watch the video, here’s the summary:

      1. The Democrats are composed of what should be 70% of the voting electorate. Spoiler alert: they miscalculated.
      2. The three main groups that should constitute a united Democratic party are typically at odds: coastal elites, blue collar workers and middle class Americans.
      3. Liberal coastal elites are not united. They don’t resonate with the rank and file.
      4. Race is a big issue. Democrats exacerbate, rather than solve racial issues. Race clashes with class, gender preference, economics, religion, etc. The Dems have bet that the country would move left, BUT (1) Hispanics became more wealthy and (2) 1st and 2nd generation Latinos are strong in the trades, and those skill sets are both massively in demand and well-paid. In other words…they’re becoming Republicans and (3) most countries are less organized and less wealthy, so the source countries have weak rule of law. Most migrants are more religious, so immigrants generally like religiion and are socially conservative. Those three issues = Republicans.
      5. Democrats are counting on Trump not being popular.  Oops.

One final thing that Zeihan didn’t mention. Democrat elders and Democrat youth go to war in ways that Republicans just don’t. Old Democrats loooooooove power and loooooooove to hold onto power. Of the 20 oldest House members elected in 2024, 16 were Democrats. Nine of the 14 Senators aged 75 or over at the start of Congress were also Democrats. Feinstein. Pelosi. Schumer. Jerry Connelly, Maxine Waters, Rose DeLauro. Sylvester Turner. Raul Grijalva. Eleanor Holmes Norton who is 87 and claims she will run again in 2026. And let’s not forget Ruth Bader Ginsberg. When Obama approached her about resigning, she supposedly said “Who are you going to get that’s better than me?” Such ego. The answer is “At this point, a sitting traffic court judge in Omaha. At least they will show up.” Of the 41 sitting Representatives who died in office since 2000, 2/3rds were Democrats.

At least when 81 year old Republican Mitch McConnell froze twice in front of reporters, he had the good graces to resign.

Rising Democrats (Hogg, AOC, etc.) are frustrated with the glacially slow pace of change and even slower access to power that they have. Hogg would rather bring down the Democrats by challenging sitting Democrats than sit meekly as a DNC vice chair. I’m sure the older Dems think “where does this kid get off” and “if it weren’t for the shooting, he wouldn’t go to Harvard and no one would know his name.” Both true, but Hogg and AOC don’t see it or think it.
