Doing some end of year cleanup today and reflecting on things.

I have a family of 6. My health insurance premiums this year were $43k. I’m self employed so I pay it all.  My premiums are going up 17% this year.

I have a high deductible plan that has served our family well for years.  But it now represents our single largest family outlay.  More than food, more than the house, more than cars and gas.  We are all healthy, no chronic disease.

How can that make any sense?  Where does the cost escalation end?  Government has screwed this up so badly that it’s going to take an act of congress to fix, and I expect the fix to be more intervention in health markets that creates more distortion and funds insurance companies to the hilt.

At this point it feels like massive trap. You have to buy the insurance, even for things that you don’t need insured. I would easily bet that I am paying for prenatal and NICU insurance, even though we will never have another kid.

      How?  Why?  Had to vent.
