This is the kind of stuff that the IRS eats up. Easy to prove (pro or con), very high publicity. Hope she’s got her taxes and social security paid up, hope their 1099’s or W-2s are accurate.
I was thinking about the women who clean my house (and the houses of many of my friends and family). They make about $50k annually. I don’t think they’re citizens. We pay by check. I wonder if they’re paying taxes, and how much if they’re doing so? I remember that when I was in Michigan, my housekeeper and gardener were citizens, and I paid them about $2 to $5 more per hour than I did in California. Both paid social security and federal withholdings and filed 1040 EZs, because government tracked deposits. When I moved to Michigan, a friend who’d moved in the other direction claimed that Michigan workers of that sort (housekeeper, gardener, nanny, etc.) all had checking accounts, and all paid taxes and that in his experience, few in California did.
