Comparing Obama’s first year of his second term with Trump’s first year of his second term across common categories:
Category Obama Trump Total Apprehensions 662,483 127,545 Border Patrol 420,789 108,909 ICE Arrests 229,698 328,000 Removals 438,421 327,000 Obama’s statistics dwarf those of Trump’s. And yes, Obama was known in some circles as the “deporter in chief.” But he wasn’t vilified anywhere close to how Trump has been vilified.
Here are ICE’s arrestees by category in the first year of Trump’s second term:
Kidnapping 1,178 Homicide 1,963 Robbery 2,748 Burglary 5,104 SexualAssault 5,497 Weapons 6,282 Dangerous drugs 22,379 DWI/DUI 29,839 Assault 42,795 All other crimes 118,178 Civil immigration violations only 156,262 -
I think 2 issues. first and maybe foremost is the tactics being used now versus in prior years. perhaps designed to make a public statement and encourage self-deportation, yet comes with the obvious downsides and debate. Second is that I believe more are being stopped from entering in the first place, so “target pool” of persons here illegally is lower and dropping.
