This is rich.   The companies that are settling opiod lawsuits are allowed to take the payout as deductions.  This leads to billions in avoided taxes. Politicians are furious.

My take?  The government has benefitted to the tune of many billions more in tax dollars from the sale of opioids.  The tax deductions only reflect a fraction of the IRS’s complicity in these ill gotten gains. The deductions ought to be allowed.

The government’s role in criminal activities that pay taxes is rarely discussed. I wonder why?  Can you imagine if the feds had to settle with states for profiting from the opiod epidemic?  That would be epic.

Right you are.  And directly from the horse’s mouth, gross incompetence as well. The FDA has regulatory authority over such things.
