I’ve admired Peggy Noonan for a long time as a realistic, pragmatic voice of moderate conservatism, and day to day people.  She’s generally quite accurate, even in times of upheaval.

And today, she wrote a doozy:

The Boiling Over of America – WSJ

The sections on the nature of Progressive politicians as inflexible narcissists is worth reading alone.

Yeah. It was a good read and does explain a lot of the issues with progressives.

That said, Peggy helped get Biden elected, so she gets a demerit from me on that.

Agree with Legend on this, except I disagree with Noonan on Red Flag laws.  They sound wonderful, and would be useful if not abused.  Bottom line for me, Red Flag laws deny otherwise law abiding citizens due process. There is an opportunity for abuse by the over zealous.

Some time back, GR posited that LE knocking on the door and asking a few questions would be enough to dissuade potential mass shooters.  I believe this to be true.

I think about “The Minority Report” whenever Red Flag laws are mentioned.  Arrest the perp before the crime is committed. What the heck, lets put AI to good use.

I learned today that background checks for firearms purchases specifically exclude juvenile criminal/psychiatric records. Requiring specific disclosure and review sure makes sense to me on the margin. Those under 25 should be vetted thoroughly.

I’m of two minds on red flag laws. First mind is that the deprive of due process, etc etc etc.  They give a busybody the ability to basically ruin a person’s life for merely being weird. “I’m red flagging that guy for having an NRA hat on and getting angry at the cashier.”

Second mind is that some level of red flag exists in real communities.  Making threats should lead to an investigation. I’m willing to listen to how you might bulletproof the process.

On juvenile crime records, they should absolutely be in NICS. It’s absurd that you get to be a delinquent up to 18 and the next day have no record.

I also believe that background checks a la NICS ought to be cheap and easy. Just have a website that you enter last name and Ssn on and it gives you a green dot or red dot.  That would get rid of a lot of the Gun show loophole discussions.

The gun show loophole is the sale between private parties.  Washington closed that loophole (I believe Oregon has the same or similar law) in that any sale between private parties must be brokered by a Federal Firearms Licensee.  There is a 3 day waiting period on the transfer.

The left loves hyperbole, and they bring it in spades when talking about gun control.  https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2013/jan/30/the-gun-show-loophole-myth/

Switzerland is a good study on gun ownership.  Estimates peg 75% of the population owns a hunting rifle, while 25% on handguns.  Switzerland  has a gun culture that works with training, regulations, and insistence on responsible gun ownership.
