It’s always entertaining reading the other board. When pro liberal/Dem or anti-Trump positions come up, admins are silent. When people openly question California’s preparedness for fire safety and the frankly horrific track record that this state had before the Pacific Palisades fire, well then…the thread gets shut down.

So. I can’t post the following there, but I’ll post it here:

Gavin Newsom says he just want to determine the facts but “no one has any patience any more.” All right Gavin. Here are the facts:

      1. Pacific Palisades/LAFD suspended brush removal in Pali.
      2. Mayor Bass cut $17.4 million to fire department and was preparing to cut $49 million more.
      3. LAFD had over sixty vehicles in repairs.
      4. A 117 million gallon reservoir in Pacific Palisades was empty
      5. LAFD fired firefighters for not getting the COVID vaccine.
      6. California prioritized the delta smelt over the water needs of people.
      7. AllState declined to renew 69% of Pacific Palisades fire insurance policies specifically because they were no longer clearing brush.
      8. Ten years ago, California passed a $17 billion water bond, including $2.7 billion for new water reservoirs, and are only now making those investments.
      9. California doesn’t prosecute petty crimes.
      10. Newsom blames climate change, but videos proving homeless started fires.
      11. Our borders are still wide open.
      12. Asked Biden to manage this misinformation that he weaponized.
      13. Incidentally, both Trump and Joe Rogan discussed California’s terrible water management policies and Newsom’s mishandling of past catastrophes and his/Mayor Karen Bass’s miserable wildfire prevention leadership. To be fair, Trump has warned about California’s water resource mismanagement and fire risk management for many years.
      14. Trump made a federal memorandum that redirected hundreds of millions of gallons of water and Newsom’s administration successfully sued to block Trump’s move.
      15. Rogan had been evacuated three times when he lived in Bell Canyon. A firefighter he met during one of the evacuations told him “when the conditions are right, a fire will roar through Los Angeles and we won’t be able to stop it.

The Democratic politicians need to be held accountable. Newsom promised on his web site that he was controlling it. Gavin needs to resign.

People forget that this little board exists because the freedom fighters over at a different board just shut down all off topic discourse.

I think these fires are a perfect storm scenario. Wind, fire, drought. And incompetent preparation.

And in the AYFKM category…Cali is looking at huge deficits and that was before the fires.  In spite of a budget shortfall, Newsome and the legislature has come up with $50M to fight Trump primarily on his deportation plan.

Lets see-  Cali has the largest homeless population of any state.  Cali spends close to $5B annually on homeless programs. Cali’s homeless population has increased every year since 2015 to almost 200k, with illegal immigrants being a large percentage of the increase.

Makes sense to me. Rather than selectively work with the feds to remove illegals, spend MORE money to keep them in place.

I wonder if Orange County will turn red when residents wanting to rebuild discover how f’ed permitting and land use laws have become in California.

Question – If your property taxes were frozen under Prop 13, would your  taxes go up on a replacement home?

I made a post on the cardboard about the disaster in California. Forestry policies have been, for 50 years now, taking pains to distance myself from Trump’s partisanship. (The fault lies with environmental dilettantes who can be found on both sides of the aisle.) I was amazed to find this characterized as too political, although the Post still up there.

I don’t know how you remember your experience on the covid board during 2020, but I was frankly appalled at the level of arrogance smugness and groupthink that prevailed. I think this is a phenomenon that dates back to 1990 or thereabouts. It’s a major contributor to the resurgence of the Republican party and the general polarization of American society.

Many of the posters would benefit enormously from a pie in the face.

I wouldn't give you two cents for all your fancy rules if, behind them, they didn't have a little bit of plain, ordinary, everyday kindness - yeah, and a little looking out for the other fella, too.

GR, Saw your post on the other site, and knew you’d be warned. I was banned during Covid. Why, because I didn’t toe the company line. Didn’t matter that I had 30+ years in HVAC and Indoor Air Quality and knew that most of the crap the powers that be were pushing would prove to be completely wrong. Facts didn’t matter, it was all about the narrative. My favorite was a poster who kept insisting that Trump was intentionally trying to kill people to enhance his election chances. He stayed, I was banned. To this day, one of the Mods still has me blocked so I can’t even solicit advice on what’s appropriate to post.

The COVID posters uniformly supported idiotic policies that would have long-term negative effects, not the least of which would be deleterious effects on the development of children who were out of school for one or two years (depending on the jurisdiction). The economic effects were broadly devastating. I pointed out that over half of San Francisco restaurants closed down during the pandemic…another poster jeered…I provided evidence based on business licenses and publicly available information. Never heard from him after that.

Freddy Escobar, an LAFD Union president warned the city about staffing shortfalls, stating that the LAFD’s short staffing was “dire” and told LA City Officials that “someone will die” because of it. He referred to it as a woefully understaffed fire department.

Tearful LA fire union prez warned of dangerous fire department understaffing last year: ‘Someone will die’

LAFD Fire Chief Kristin Crowley stated that the fire department’s staff levels were half the size that it should be based on standards laid out by the National Fire Protection Association. This is according to CNN.

If memory serves, the LAFD has the same number of firefighters today as they did in the 1960s.

25 people dead so far. $250 billion to $275 billion in damages per Accuweather. 420,000 people without power. 88,000 ordered to evacuate. 17,000 acres in Pacific Palisades…larger than island of Manhattan…has gone up in smoke. Goldman Sachs estimates that the fires will reduce jobs by between 15,000 and 25,000 and will depress job creation in surrounding counties. Tourism will shrink. Long term health effects will suffer. Rents will go up immediately in a place that is already prohibitively expensive in which to live.

Insurance companies cancelled many insurance policies. Many of them have $3 million caps on building. Regardless, they’ll pay out as little as they can.
