MickParticipantWhat’s the matter with Portland? Shootings, theft and other crime test city’s progressive strain
My favorite quote from this article is “Simonis said the problem is not that Portland is too liberal, but that it is not liberal enough” Yeah, that’s the problem. Simonis has a “DISARM, DEFUND, DISMANTLE POLICE” sign in her front yard.
- Shootings have tripled
- Homeless in Metro has increased from 4k to 6,600
- Auto theft increased from 6,500 in 2019 to 11k in 2022
- Fatal drug overdoses doubled between 2019 and 2021
- Spending for homeless has climbed from $27 mms. in 2017 to $94 mms.
76% of voters thought Portland was “headed in the right direction” in 2000, dropping to 36% by 2020 and it is now 11%.

ParticipantI’ll start with this.
https://www.oregonlive.com/living/2013/05 why_oregons_suicide_rate_is_am.html
Sat with a couple of local River Patrol Officers at dinner last night. According to them, suicides are under-reported. They pull one suicide victim from the water every week, and they are only one of 4 teams that patrol the Willamette and Columbia rivers.
More to follow. There is a lot here to unwrap.

ParticipantI’m not a mental health expert but I can see that things are way off in a lot of places like Portland. So I’ll go to Occam’s Razor.
It’s not at all about a shortage of mental health professionals. In fact those people may make things worse. Human biology and errors in our wiring may be just sorting this out.

MickParticipantA liberal / Progressive acquaintance of mine posted this on Facebook. And no, she didn’t intend it to be ironic. She’s a true believer…
Quick shout out to the Los Gatos homeless camp inhabitants who have recently incorporated a solar panel into their setup. Game changer, I’m sure.

ParticipantShow her some love and send her this link. She can get a carrier status report that may tell which variants are effecting her mental health. But no COVID shots before she takes the test.
