Senate Anti-lynching legislation

cnn reports that the three AA senators are sponsoring legislation to make lynching a federal hate crime.

I assume this is a symbolic move, right?  I am not making fun, I just didn’t think that lynching was a current social / criminal problem.

Personally, I think making a gang shooting a federal hate crime would do more today than this, but again, I understand the symbolism.
