Bad news: SFPD has 1,475 full-duty sworn officers while recommended staffing level is more than 3,000 officers. Sheriff’s office is short 200 deputies.

Good news: entry level applications are up 40% for the San Francisco Police Department:

San Francisco police reports surge in recruits; entry-level applications up 40%

They received 3,375 entry-level applications. They have had four full classes in a row. Net positive increase in officers on the street for the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This is due to an aggressive hiring strategy with competitive pay and benefits. Crime is down 30% citywide (from stratospheric levels), violent crime is down 18%. First year cops make $119,262. Frankly, you couldn’t pay me enough to do that job. A seventh-year officer makes $164,164.
