Bill Martin is KTVU’s meteorologist, and resident goofy guy. Commenting on the uniqueness of today’s orange smoke filled skies in the Bay Area, he said while it’s new for all of us, it’s not new for California. He cited historical weather accounts from the early 19th century and even much earlier, where the summer skies would turn dark from the smoke of fires around the state. Bill noted that in those days, fires would start and just burn and burn, pumping smoke into the CA valleys.

This, combined with the ecological nature of much of the flora of CA that is dependent upon fire to germinate, makes me continue to wonder if fires are returning to the norm in CA and the last century was a period of relative good fortune.

Can’t put my hands on it now, but several months ago I read that the last one hundred years weather in California was wetter than normal.

Interesting. Would like to read that. Interestingly though, I doubt any year was wetter than 1861ish when it rained for 40 straight days and filled up the Central Valleys and many others with flood water. Legend has it that Leland rowed from his inauguration to the mansion and climbed in through the second story window. . . .
