Seems that there’s a massive dispute over his life and legacy.  Melissa McCarthy is producing Bob Ross: Happy Accidents, Betrayal & Greed , which will be released on Netflix on August 25.

Everyone should see the Netflix documentary “Bob Ross: Happy Accidents, Betrayal & Greed.” There’s a business story here: A sad tale about how the owners of his estate cut out Ross’s only son from receiving any money from the ongoing enterprise. That is not what Ross wanted. There are other surprises. Even if you don’t paint or didn’t spend much time watching his iconic painting program, this is a fascinating film. The actress Melissa McCarthy and her husband produced the film that started out as a story bout the man’s life, but became a much bigger story about how greedy people can be. It also demonstrates the importance of protecting your product, image, or intellectual property. (Ross was not a greedy man and produced his art out of love for art and teaching.)

I can’t ever tell how much of this sort of stuff is merely promo for the latest film.  That kind of news coverage is a sneaky way of promoting films all too often these days.

The Ross story sounds pretty typical of a person who probably didn’t know the value of what he had done and the following that he had.  The fact that my daughter, at 16, knows who Ross is has to to be a testament to the ongoing enterprise built in his name, and to the man himself.

However, that people are greedy when they have control is nothing new. Ask Zimbardo.
