Mick1Participant- Government funding runs out / we hit the government debt ceiling on March 14. These folks are proposing that the Democrats force a governmental shutdown to get the Trump administration to make concessions. (Oh please, Br’er Rabbit…)
- A host of Democratic governors are demanding that Democratic Minority leader Chuck Schumer punish Democrats who vote for Trump nominations. Interesting precedent…so the idea is no cooperation, ever, under any circumstances with members of the other party?

ParticipantThis is rich. I hope the Republican playbook includes rolling out clips of every Democrat in the last twenty years who complained about Republicans threatening to shut down the Federal government.
A fun look back in time…
- President Barack Obama expressed strong opposition to Republican tactics during the 2013 government shutdown, stating that a shutdown would have “a very real economic impact on real people, right away.” He attributed the shutdown to a faction within the Republican Party attempting to undo the results of the election through financial threats.
- House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi referred to the 2013 event as the “Tea Party Shutdown” and described the House Republicans’ actions as those of “legislative arsonists.”
- Senator Bernie Sanders criticized the influence of wealthy donors on the shutdown, stating, “Right now, as we speak, in the House of Representatives there are people who are being threatened that if they vote for a clean CR [continuing resolution to reopen the government] that huge sums of money will be spent against them in the next election.”
During the Biden Administration:
- House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries blamed Republicans for a potential government shutdown, stating that they would “own any harm” resulting from such an event.
- Senator Chris Murphy has been vocal against President Donald Trump’s efforts to overhaul the federal government, urging continuous activism to counter these policies.
- Senator Bernie Sanders criticized the administration’s extensive budget cuts, particularly those led by Elon Musk, highlighting the detrimental impacts on social welfare programs.
- Representative Angie Craig introduced the MCCARTHY Shutdown Act, aiming to withhold congressional pay during shutdowns, as a direct response to Republican tactics.
Just a few examples of Democratic leaders condemning Republican strategies that involve leveraging government shutdowns during budgetary disputes.
