      Letter from our Bernie.

      Dear David,

I hope this note finds you and yours safe and well, despite the many challenges our country and our world currently face.

In light of the uncertainty surrounding a topic that is near and dear to all of us, I am writing today to you, a loyal football Season Ticket Member, with an update about our preparations for the 2020-21 academic year and the rapidly-approaching football season.

Mirroring the phased approach to easing restrictions and stay-at-home orders that local counties and the state of California have implemented, our staff has been diligently working with internal and external constituents, including medical professionals, public health experts, university leaders, the Pac-12 and the NCAA, to develop a plan for resuming athletics practices and competitions.

While the situation continues to evolve, there have been several recent updates from the Pac-12, the NCAA and Stanford University, respectively, that will help guide our return to football.

      • The Pac-12 allowed voluntary in-person athletic activities for all sports to commence on June 15, subject to campus, local, state and federal guidelines and decisions. Last week, we began welcoming student-athletes into our outdoor facilities to participate in voluntary activities.
      • The NCAA’s Division I Council approved a model for football summer athletic activities and preseason practice, which creates a common framework under which full-team activities can begin as soon as July 13 and ramp up gradually until teams are prepared to compete in their originally-scheduled season openers.
      • President Marc Tessier-Levine and Provost Persis Drell provided an update on plans for the 2020-21 academic year, although there are still many important details to finalize before fall quarter. We are working closely with the President, Provost and other university leaders to determine how changes to Stanford’s residential life may impact student-athletes.

Overall, these are promising developments. With the support of the university and the county, I hope to welcome our football team, and all of our fall teams, back to campus as soon and as safely as possible.

Similarly, I truly hope we are able to welcome all of our loyal supporters, especially our Season Ticket Members, to Stanford Stadium this fall. However, in light of the continued uncertainty surrounding COVID-19, including reports of accelerating infection rates across much of our country, we must prepare for many different possibilities. In all scenarios, the health and safety of our student-athletes, fans, staff and community will be our top priority.

Two of the potential scenarios we are preparing for would be greatly disappointing for all of us: a significantly reduced stadium capacity and games played without any fans in attendance. Should either of these scenarios begin to look more likely than not, our staff will be in touch with further details, and you will have an opportunity to share your feedback and preferences at that point.

I want to assure you that, should the season not progress as originally planned, we will provide you with a number of options with respect to your Season Ticket Membership. In the event you do not have an opportunity to attend any game this season, or decide not to due to COVID-19, a full refund of your Season Ticket Membership will be included among those options, as will converting some or all of your ticket payment to a tax-deductible Buck/Cardinal Club gift.

It is difficult to imagine our student-athletes playing in front of a mostly or entirely empty stadium, and the potential financial ramifications of such a scenario becoming a reality would present unprecedented challenges to our ability to provide an unparalleled experience to our student-athletes. Regardless of what happens in the months ahead, though, I am heartened knowing that you and so many others will help us weather the storm in whatever form you are able.

As we continue to pursue our mission of inspiring champions in life, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude and well wishes to you and your loved ones.

Our staff will contact you via email with more updates when we have new information to share.

Thank you again, and go Cardinal!

      Sincerely,

So, in other words, Stanford AD is going to do everything possible to not refund your money.  At this point, it’s not clear to me I will be able to obtain lodging or find a place to eat.

At this point, I am ready to tell Bernie – 1) Give me a full refund with no loss of STH longevity or 2) keep the money and forget any possibility of me attending another game.

“It is difficult to imagine our student-athletes playing in front of a mostly or entirely empty stadium,”

Clearly a man who has no understanding of Stanford.

We will see more executive action on getting unpaid black (and white) athletes back on the field this fall than we will to act on real race relation reforms or prosecution of vandals and looters.  Ask Willie Sutton why.

Yeah, Stanford is so poor. But wait…. the forty year decision! We are giving our grads a gift! So we can exploit them now.

And now they want a gift.

I’ve probably been to 625 games since 1953. Give me my fukking refund Bern.
