LegendKeymasterWhy was Will Smith not escorted from the ceremony and arrested?
Imagine if he were Mel Gibson.

ParticipantBut the Academy is investigating. Wonder what standard it will use to determine which “appropriate” action it will take.
Trying to imagine how this plays out if Tina Fey delivers the same line as Chris Rock.

LegendKeymasterI’m amazed at the lack of condemnation. Rock is a comedian. The joke may have been in poor taste, but it wasn’t even close to a Don Rickles insult.
Smith has serious issues. I can’t believe the lack of action on this. It’s like abuse that is “inside the family.”
A terrible precedent.

Apparently they attempted to escort him from the building. They asked him to leave and he refused.
In response, the Academy is preparing a disciplinary action. Should be interesting. The only individuals who have been expelled from the Academy were some pretty bad actors; Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosby, Roman Polanski and Carmine Caridi (kicked out for sharing screeners).

ParticipantA terrible precedent.[/quote]
I’d like see Chris Rock file charges and go after Smith in a monster civil suit. It will make these jerks and their wives think twice. You don’t have a civil society when you can sucker punch or slap anyone, anytime you feel like it. You will get anarchy.

ParticipantThe whole toxic bullying scene was cringe, as well as Smith’s speech after winning his Oscar. I saw someone comment that Will Smith probably would not have done that if Dwayne Johnson “The Rock” had been hosting and made that joke.
I have some new respect for Chris Rock who managed to handle it about as well as anyone could expect, without escalating or dwelling on it, and simply moving on.

LegendKeymasterActually, Rock displayed one of the more amazing examples of a professional approach. He was slapped by an international superstar and didn’t really leave character. It was tragic but amazing to watch.
Agree that the acceptance speech was awful, especially on reflection. Love makes you do strange things. Truth. Ask OJ.
Smith should be ostracized but we will see. I personally wonder where security was. Amazing that ANYBODY could just walk on stage, including Will Smith.

MickParticipantAnd the decision is in, about 10 days earlier than expected. The Academy has suspended Will Smith from participating in any event including the Oscars for 10 years. Smith accepted and respected the decision.
