I have a neighbor who hangs his American flag upside down. People from both sides of the political aisle tend to agree with the sentiment and they all think he sides with them.

It hard to swallow how far we have fallen in the last 50 years. From 1870 to 1970, the US led the world with new ideas, patents and machines. Over the last 50 years, the US has lost its fastball. IMO, we held a lead in digital technology for about 15 years and managed to fritter it away.
We’ve gone from being inventors to influencers.
We’re on a trajectory similar to Rome and the Han Dynasty. They became bloated and expensive to maintain. Citizens lost their sense of unity. Elites became more interested in their own wealth and reputation than supporting the empire. Like failed empires of the past, we are suffering from a run of ineffectual leaders, and the next election will likely not reverse that trend.
In 1962, Kennedy rallied Americans around the challenge of going to the moon. “We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things not because they are easy, but because they are hard. Because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we’re willing to accept. One we are unwilling to postpone.”
Looking back, we lost our sense of purpose after landing on the moon. It seems like anyone under 40 goes into a full scale meltdown if they can’t access social media for 30 minutes.
I ache thinking about what lies ahead for my granddaughters.

ParticipantAll of what you say is true but my gut tells me there is something else going on that is truly evil having to do with technology and biological science. It’s subtle, ubiquitous and bending the curve of what it means to be human at least as we have known it. I see people all the time who are angry but they don’t know at what or why.
A female who says he’s male writes a manifesto, kills some kids and a couple of adults in a Christian School randomly to get even with his imagined tormentors and gets some support from allies in the media post mortem. Love to know what meds he was taking. Love to hear what he wrote in his manifesto. The tell in all this is that we are not allowed to know. The media wants me to know that I lack compassion because of a pronoun deficiency.
Most of what I have ever believed I now know was a lie.

cardcrimsonParticipantI’ve read some of the texts she sent, telling friends that she was going to die and they’d hear about it. That she just wanted to die. Clearly, death by cop is a type of suicide, but taking three innocent kids and three innocent adults with you? What is wrong with this world we’ve created.

ParticipantBeeg Dawg, that was an awesome post. I can get terribly morose these days when I see the decline and collapse in every direction I look. I have not really been a pessimist in the past but so much of what I loved about our country is being debased these days. It feels much more hopeless than 1979 or 2007.

MickParticipantCandidly, I’d be on both ends of that graph. I used to be really proud to be American. Now…not really. Not most of the time.
