Interesting turns in LA Mayor’s race. Nithya Raman, 44 year old Progressive with a Capital P, filed to run just a few hours before the deadline. Same week, some very serious contenders dropped out, including Austin Beutner, civic leader; Rick Caruso, developer; Lindsey Horvath, former county supervisor whose district included Pacific Palisades.
Karen Bass, 72, Mayor on the job when two LA cities burned to the ground while she was out of the country, is losing contenders. Spencer Pratt, Adam Miller, Rae Huang, all not running.
LA has issues: skyrocketing housing costs, lawsuits, crumbling infrastructure, show business contraction, widespread displacement. It is at a breaking point, says Ms. Raman, who has a master’s in urban planning from MIT. She was a city councilperson who was endorsed in her reelection by Mayor Bass herself.
