Casualties may be in the thousands. Florida and to some extent Georgia were prepared because of their experience with hurricanes. In Florida, 2M+ people lost power. As of this morning, only about 87k are left without power. Ron DeSantis sent the Florida National Guard to North Carolina on Saturday. There are still lots of property losses in Florida and Georgia. But a hurricane had not hit Western North Carolina since 1916. And yes, that storm caused catastrophic flooding.
My question is, why didn’t they release water from the reservoirs two weeks ago, when the forecasts predicted that the storm would end up sitting in that region? Also, why wasn’t anyone staged to help? Why aren’t the airborne search and rescue units at Fort Bragg being sent to the area (they are tweeting that they are fueled and ready to go….)?
Added charities that are working on relief efforts.

LegendKeymasterI live about 45 mins from Asheville NC. We got hit really hard.
it’s hard to see how bad this is going to be, because the mountains are completely cut off in a lot of cases. Asheville is not a tiny city, it sits at the intersection of multiple interstate highways, and it’s basically inaccessible.
I don’t know the story on reservoirs, but I can tell you that rain events are heavily amplified in the blue ridge as I suspect they are in many mountain areas, and this storm was not only heavy rain but the winds generated a ton of debris.
you may be referring to the Lake Lure dam, which was near failure but I think has survived. It’s about 30 miles from our home. I don’t know how much water they could have released from lake lure ahead of time. It’s not a huge lake.
We just had power come back on last night but there are many without power and gas lines everywhere. It’s a disaster and we are still 10 miles from the foothills of the blue ridge.
the good news is no looting that I know of.
Edit: this could easily be an October surprise in favor of Trump… proof that Biden and Harris don’t give two shits about hillbilly white people. I don’t think the GOP is strong enough to do it, and Trump will make a mess of it by making it us vs them racially.

No Congress. Too busy running for re-election.
Some reports of looting.
Truckers organized a convoy of water. They claim they had their tires slashed. Probably related to this:

Not sure if the Internet ate my post. Verizon data is having an outage.
I’m glad you’re safe. Any relief organization recommendations beyond what I posted?

LegendKeymasterI don’t really know what organizations are active. National guard is supposedly working to clear brush and the bucket trucks are everywhere near me as of today.

Katrina was wall-to-wall coverage. Telethons on television (where Kanye said that “George Bush doesn’t care about black people” next to a stunned Mike Myers). What changed?

I understand the concern for the safety of air assets (helicopters), but the private citizens who are responding seem pretty good at coordinating. Of course, the flight restrictions are spawning conspiracy theories.

Biden and Harris finally headed to North Carolina, after 182 dead. Will be in Georgia and Florida today.

Always a complicating factor when visiting disaster areas. Doubly so I’m mountainous areas where relief efforts rely on aerial assets.
Also, outside of Asheville and Boone, these are heavily red areas. A few thousand casualties / suppressed turnout may flip the state blue.

Good thread about the importance of rural Appalachia to the economy, and frustration with relief efforts.

Mick1ParticipantExcellent thread. The supply chain is so fragile, every part is important, and it’s easy for the political party in charge to forget about taking care of the flyover people…kinda stunning how they used to be the backbone of the Democratic party and now the Dems have largely forgotten them.

cardcrimsonParticipantLegend, first and foremost I’m glad you’re safe and sound. Wife and I were married at Montreat, not for from Asheville. The devastation is unimaginable. The government’s response has been awful. Didn’t even think about the “public’s” response. Katrina was tough, no doubt. This is just as bad. To rodpodge’s point, where’s the media? Where’s Hollywood? Shameful. Prayers are with the folks there, and their kin elsewhere.

Sporadic reports of looting. One report that truckers who organized a convoy of water to the Asheville area stopped at a rest stop on I-40, and had their tires slashed. May be related to this earlier incident.

Do you have relief work recommendations beyond those I already posted?
