Like most Governors, the Gov of California is prone to taking credit for things that he has had literally nothing to do with:

Newsom spotlights San Francisco as he touts California economy

At the same time, he wants to be President. He knows he can’t do that, given the long list of problems that CA faces, many due to his policies or his indifference. I believe he thinks he has a unique, one-time Presidential opportunity in 2028, given that either (a) Kamala Harris will fail to win the Presidency or (b) she will win and fail miserably.

Therefore, Newsom is taking the first steps to rehabilitate the state. He wasted no time closing homeless camps:

Newsom says San Jose should take urgent action on homeless camps

I suspect you will soon see:

      1. Tough on crime programs.
      2. Tough on illegal immigration issues.
      3. Reduction in spending.
      4. No more new taxes (read his lips).
      5. Trimming of red tape for business.
      6. Curtailing of certain environmental stances, particularly those that hinder resource development (water, energy, etc.).
      7. I imagine his bullet-train-to-nowhere will die a miserable death.

I think you’ll see a lot of decisions unpopular with the left in the next 12 months, followed by Progressive programs in the subsequent 12 months, all in an effort to install Governor Handsome in 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Wash DC. He terms out in 2026, and will start running for Prez immediately thereafter (if Harris loses) or supporting various national Progressive causes (if Harris wins).

would not surprise me.   he continues to be the darling of many, so obviously has some skills.  I say this because to my eye California has not been well-governed, so I might have expected his name to not be spoken of so highly nationally.

This isn’t a conspiracy theory, just my own personal musing and assessment of a few disparate blue state talking points, but…

As I gather, when the Lefty/Progressive/Democratic powers that be confronted Joe Biden and threatened to employ the 25th Amendment to remove him from power (and I think we all agree it’s going to be a rocky ride until late January with him in place), they started talking about candidates to replace Biden, and the two names that led the pack were Gretchen Whitmer and Gavin Newsom. A handful of minor candidates were mentioned, but Harris was not mentioned, and she was monumentally pissed…after all, she was the VP!

She was also the #16 ranked Democrat and first to drop out of the 2020 presidential primaries, for very good reason. Pick your poison…stiff, tart, humorless, can’t think on her feet, crushed by Tulsi Gabbard (and others) in the debates, and above all, not appearing Presidential.

Fast forward to 2024…my…suspicion…is that Kamala saw her opportunity and carpe diem’ed the heck out of it. Either Kamala talked Biden into promoting her in that first tweet or Biden decided to tweak the Democratic party for (in his view) prematurely ending his political career, and this was his way of thumbing his nose at them. Or both. And the KAM Uh luh presidential effort was born.

Harris, to her credit, built a DEI hype bubble to support her rapid ascension into the political nethersphere — given that her Presidential credentials, quite literally, do not exist. At all. At the same time, no self-respecting lefty can turn down a minority female, because we all know the most important thing someone can be is the First Ever (fill in the blank).

Democratic governors have more baggage than a cruise ship.  Jay Inslee is a perfect example when you have nothing but ideology to float your boat. (Pun intended.)

WSF problems entirely predictable – and avoidable

In his haste to save the planet, he is costing Washington residents a “boatload” of misery, not mention hitting their pocketbook with fees, taxes and assessments to reduce our collective carbon footprint.

That’s a good point. Kamala’s home state is rife with problems, described on this board ad nauseum. That should be the theme…”Do you want America to look like California?” I listened to Buttigieg go on and on about how Trump’s tax cuts benefited the rich and corporations, causing the great Have/Have Not gulf. The greatest Have/Have Not gulf, by far, is in California.

The only thing she did well was that she was actually a good, conservative DA, basically a law-and-order Dem, one of a vanishing breed. At the same time, she can’t trumpet that success because (a) it runs against Democratic mores and (b) she’s tied to the Defund the Police narrative.

There’s so much “there” that Trump and Vance should be attacking…

Newsom’s initial efforts at reining in spending are not universally appreciated by Democrats:

California Governor’s Drastic Budget Measures Get a Frosty Reception (msn.com)

Here’s the hard part for Newsom: businesses are already fleeing the Golden State. Newsom has a $46.8 billion shortfall, and he wants to make up $15 billion of it by eliminating business tax breaks. That’s going to result in more businesses going under or leaving.

On top of all that, to access the state’s “rainy day fund”, he had to declare a fiscal emergency. Doesn’t look good on the ol’ presidential resume and ticks off fellow Democrats who want to pretend that everything’s hunky-dory.

Basically, Newsom has a lot of bitter pills to swallow, and he has until the end of his governorship in 2026 to do so, before he can point to the “right-the-ship” success that he thinks will occur.

California is soon to greenlight $150k home loans for undocumented immigrants. Wonder how that will impact Gov. Newsom’s image?
