ParticipantJust wanted to wish you all a belated welcome to the new American oligarchy.
How soon will it be before we look like Hungary and Russia, where the media and our institutions are controlled by the executive branch? They already cower in front of Trump. I suspect that last few bastions of liberal media will soon be owned by some kind of Trump aligned oligarch, like Musk. Or perhaps Trump himself once his meme-coin grift is settled.
It’s a shame, because we could have been a country like the Nordics, with strong Democratic institutions, healthcare guarantees, education guarantees, etc., But instead we are quickly turning in an illiberal country like Hungary. Not a big surprise, considering CPAC (an American organization) held annual events in Hungary in 2022 and 2023. Republican leaders and influencers, like Tucker Carlson and JD Vance, have been praising Orban. And conservative think-tanks like the Heritage Foundation have discussed Hungary as a case study for American conservatives.
Our media is kowtowing to Trump. Our judiciary is already losing its independence (several examples in the last year from the Supreme Court and Judge Aileen Cannon). Electoral fairness is eroding rapidly, with hundreds of lawsuits seeking to undermine the election process over the last few years by Republicans and hundreds of new laws in red states making it harder to vote, throwing out votes, etc. Power is being centralized in the executive branch. The barriers between church and state are eroding. The grift and corruption is being supercharged.
Some dystopian predictions:
Four years from now (probably sooner), the few outlets where liberals can / could freely express themselves, like YouTube and Reddit, will be owned by Musk or another Trump aligned oligarch. Trump will find a way to force a sale of YouTube. And what do you know – one of his cronies will find themselves as the new owner after he threatens others who may be interested in a purchase (or they self-select out of the process, fearing retribution) — reminiscent of the media take-over by Putin when he came to power, and Viktor Orban. TikTok will probably have a similar fate shortly. And as we have seen with Twitter, the algorithms will be supercharged to suppress liberal ideas and promote conservativism.
Top Democratic candidates will be under investigation for bullshit reasons. But conservatives will eat it all up and believe it’s all true, like they did with the “Biden Crime Family” crap and the January 6th insanity.
Taiwan will be part of China by the end of Trumps current term: not necessarily attacked, per se, but more likely blockaded and strangled economically. Trump will make a “deal” to capitulate in exchange for some milquetoast concessions. Conservatives will eat it up and explain how it is such a great deal because [fill in the blank with the usual penis gargling reasons].
There will not be another Democratic President in my lifetime. At least half the country is still aligned with the Democratic ideas. But with the erosion of electoral fairness, judicial independence, media independence, and an increase in corruption, it will be all but impossible. We will still have elections, but they will look more like Hungary, Iran, and Russia – where the outcome is more or less pre-ordained. The House has already introduced legislation to allow Trump a third term. How soon before we get an American style “Enabling Act”? https://encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/article/the-enabling-act. I used to think something that was impossible in America, but with Trump claiming he is God’s chosen man, his history of threating the opposition, his enemies’ lists, and the oligarchs all paying obeisance to him, it doesn’t seem far fetched anymore. Maybe it won’t happen, but then again I never expected half of this shit to happen in America.
And God help Ukraine. They are in a position to win if Trump supports them adequately. Trump hasn’t completely thrown them under the bus yet. But I’ll leave you with a quote from Ramsay Bolton / Game of Thrones: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FT4_Fefew78.
There will be millions more refugees in Europe. He’ll blame his envoy (Kellog); he’ll blame Zelenskyy; and MAGATs will eat it up.
Just remember: you voted for this.

ParticipantEverything you describe is conjecture about your fear of what Trump will do in the future and, as fiction, it is almost entirely not true. In fact, because progressives are totally self-absorbed, they assume that the way they have done things will almost certainly be what Trump will do – in reverse. I wish that were true, but Democrats have never had to suffer any consequences for the illegal, undemocratic and immoral things they have done for decades; certainly the period since Obama came on the scene. The vast majority of the oligopoly is on your side, BT. That’s why Kamala could raise a billion dollars for her campaign in a nanosecond because all your Soroses and Hoffmans and Steyers. You experience not getting your way for a week and you’re screaming about the extremists on the right taking away rights. Just wait. We’re only just getting started. We won’t even need to wiretap your leaders, or lie about your demonstrators. Go ahead and speak your piece. But if you get treated like the minority you have always been, just remember. Your side has been doing MUCH worse for many years. I just hope this current surge of common sense lasts for a good long while.

ParticipantIt has nothing to do with not “getting my way for a week”. I could have written all of that (and had been thinking about it) long before the inauguration.
The crap you suggest ‘my side’ has been doing is pure BS or had very reasonable justification. I do not consider myself progressive per se. I consider myself to on the side of pro-democracy and pro rule of law. I know you think I’m some kind of libtard, but most of the talking heads I listen to are former Republicans and people who think of themselves as conservatives.
By the way, I made some predictions. But not everything I said was conjecture. Trump is grifting on a massive scale. The oligarchs are afraid of him (Bezos intervened to halt the newspaper’s planned endorsement of Harris , Zuck has done a 180 and started spouting nonsense to please Trump, etc.). The media is falling in line. The courts have betrayed obvious corruption in favor of Trump. Red and purple states are enacting endless laws targeting liberals to make it harder for them to vote.
These aren’t hypotheticals. It’s bad already and will get far worse soon.
Yes, I made some predictions, as well. I hope I’m wrong about them, but there is enough evidence to expect most of them will come true. Or, if they don’t, it won’t be for a lack of trying on the MAGA side.

Stopped reading after that. You’re joking, right? The media and our institutions have been controlled by the executive branch, well at least the democrats for a generation or more. Trump is working to reverse that.

Mick1ParticipantJust wanted to wish you all a belated welcome to the new American oligarchy.
Thanks, man…but your welcome is four years too late. Or really, 16 years too late. Come to think of it…32 years too late.
This is my favorite Lefty shibboleth. In reality, the Democrats have held sway over this country with the overwhelming support of the rich; e.g., Wall Street, Silicon Valley, Hollywood; and the powerful; e.g., Big Media, Big Academia, Big Law lawyers, non-profits. And those groups fully, totally and completely abandoned the working and middle classes, whom they had taken for granted for over a century.
It’s a shame, because we could have been a country like the Nordics, with strong Democratic institutions, healthcare guarantees, education guarantees
We were never going to be a Nordic country. Clinton, Obama and Biden saw to that. They kowtow to billionaires like nobody’s business. They protect the billionaires’ gravy train and you know it.
You have some gall. The Democrats screwed things up for the last four years with…well, basically everything they did. The make-believe world they created. Wokeness. The mostly peaceful destroyers from two years ago. The cartoonishly ridiculous overreaction to COVID that ruined both the economy and education and then Biden and Harris tried to pretend they “saved” the USA. Worst of all, the deepfake pretend lawfare, the weaponization of the DoJ and various courts to invent charges so they could call Trump a felon. Do you have any concept of how well the average American understands the perfidy of the Left and the utter and complete refusal of the left to even acknowledge, much less apologize for their treachery and deceit?
The Left drips in lies, marinates in deceit. Remember the Hunter Biden laptop and all those Trump haters (excuse me, “respected government professionals”) who signed the ad that the Biden laptop was a deepfake? AYFKM? And when one of their own comes clean (like the MIT prof/consultant who bragged that the Left had to deceive the stupid American people to get Obamacare passed), then the Left ostracizes them for pointing out that the Great and Powerful Oz is like any other charlatan.
Here’s why voters rejected the Left. The subtitle says it all, basically a perfect description of the Left. This about sums it up:
“They have tried to do a zillion different things and done them badly, at great expense.”
Democrats Deserved to Lose – The Atlantic
The Left’s hairbrained idiocies finally got to the American people, the same people who get really, really tired of being told that sxxt is Shinola:
And your pretense that international relations will tank…again, AYFKM? The Democrat War Machine has fed overseas conflict, Trump is trying to stop it, no thanks to the Dems’ insistent supplying of the Ukraine, a country ranked 122nd of 180 it is so corrupt, a country that fed Hunter and The Big Guy millions of dollars. We risk thermonuclear war for that country, a country which existence is an eyeblink?
Your party put a senile man with dementia in the Presidential office. If it hadn’t been for COVID, Biden would have come nowhere near the Presidency. Worse still, Biden’s supporters surrounded and protected a man whose decline was accelerating, who literally didn’t know what he was doing. Unelected aides enforced a Progressive agenda that America didn’t vote for.
Inflation raged. Of course. Things got worse. Of course. Our Southern border was left unattended and our country has filled with non-Americans. Of course
And then…and then…your party has the unmitigated gall to (a) pretend Biden is still a viable candidate and then (b) replace Biden with Kamala Harris, a “candidate” who makes Michael Dukakis look like FDR, Thomas Jefferson and Abe Lincoln all rolled into one. A billion+ dollars couldn’t get that idiot elected.
And now…they’re talking about making her Governor of California?

ParticipantKamala is the governor California deserves. 🙂
It astounds me the enlightened voters of 2008- you know, the ones who voted for Obama – transformed into uneducated MAGA sycophants in 2024.

cardcrimsonParticipantHeard on KCBS radio this morning that there is another move afoot for California to secede from the Union. The reasoning? Trump and MAGA.
How perfect would that be. Become independent and be governed by Kamala. Exactly what the state deserves.

Mick1ParticipantTrivia: Which state has the most registered Republicans of the 30 states which allow partisan affiliation on their voter registration forms? (Texas does not).
Answer: California, with 5,332,858 as of March, 2024. Florida is next with 5.14 million, then Pennsylvania with 3.475 million and New York with 2.7 million.
And California has the most independents, by far (myself included) with 4.845 million.

California. Staggering debt, ineffectual leaders and a $50M slush fund set aside for the express purpose of fighting Trump, specifically his immigration policies.
Amazing, but making Trump the bogey man directs attention from the real problems.
