MickParticipantBecause they won. They have won virtually every major and minor battle since the 1960s. America has grown more prosperous, and people have supported all of the Lefty trends on immigration, civil rights, government spending, increases in benefits and maintenance of entitlements, the environment and on and on.
The Dems have won. And when people win, they naturally act to double down, to go further, to demand more…at which point, the body politic revolts.
It’s a pendulum…it bounces back and forth. In 2008, when Obama was elected, there was a 12-point divide between Dems and Dem-leaning independents (52%) and Republicans and Republican-leaning independents (40%). Today, the Repubs have a 1% lean (46% to 45%).
Party Affiliation | Gallup Historical Trends
Most interesting, is that there were 45.1 million registered Dems and 36 million registered Republicans in September, 2024, but 105.4 million unregistered voters. Please note, approximately 40% of states do not register by party affiliation.

ParticipantPendulums definitely swing! Sometimes in minor ways, and sometimes major. I feel like right now we have a pendulum swinging in multiple dimensions, and things will settle into a a more moderate pattern of change by 2030. We shall see . . .

MickParticipantI think it depends on how the economy goes. If Trump can successfully thread the needle — lower rates, strong economy, rebuilds American manufacturing, saves Social Security, tariffs don’t hurt the economy, etc. — then it will go well. If not…it won’t.

LegendKeymasterIt’s crazy that Trump has to deliver real change while all Biden had to do was snooze for the same approval rate.
Trump won’t accomplish everything, and any particular failure is used as evidence of general failure.
