MickParticipantThe Washington Examiner sure thinks so. They think Democrats have, in the main, learned nothing from the 2024 presidential election debacle. They don’t think Pritzker or Booker are serious candidates. Harris will get zero funding, and the Dems are unlikely to run a third woman like Whitmer after Harris’ and Clinton’s failures. They need to appeal to males. And in recent polls, the only Democrat close to Newsom is Buttigieg. And of those mentioned, only Newsom (a) scratches the masculine itch as Dems desperately need to re-attract males and (b) doesn’t have the Biden stink on him.
A recent POLITICO survey shows Newsom leading Harris among Democrats and Democrat-leaning independents by 25% to 19%.
Newsom has what Dems want:
- Powerful primary resume.
- Forefront of extreme gun control proposals
- High taxes on the rich
- Push to green energy (and other lefty proposals). Basically, he’s “progressive enough.”
- He counters Trump.
- State with the greatest economy by far (and the country’s worst poverty rates, highest taxes, soft penalties for career criminals, carveouts for Hollywood, etc.)
- The Democrat brand is toxic and out of touch, worst numbers in decades. And yet, California is a Democrat stronghold. The Dems think that’s exportable to other states.
California has well-documented challenges that were either caused, exacerbated or ignored by Newsom. And the here’s the main thing:
Unlike Clinton or Harris, Newsom isn’t repulsive. He’s not Obama or Biden, but he doesn’t have to be.

MickParticipantNewsom’s support has more than doubled from his June support. He’s (comparatively speaking) a manly man, at least relative to the other Democrats.
He has a chance. Personally, I hope he implodes, I think he’s a sleazy creep.

ParticipantOK, Newsome is leading “Undecided” in the polls. Not what I consider a ringing endorsement. More like – “If I have to pick someone, Gavin looks like a regular guy I could vote for”.
I would love to see a debate between Vance and Newsome.

Me too. That would be a battle of wits. Vance would annihilate Newsom. Newsom has dyslexia and Vance has a tOSU degree and a law degree from Yale (he was at Sidley, great firm), was a venture capitalist, and was in the Marines and Iraq.
Incidentally, it wasn’t all that long ago that Newsom had record low approval ratings:

MickParticipantDemocrats are becoming obsessed with Newsom. They think the need a more traditional choice, that they just need to win and they think he’s a winner.
Gavin Newsom is becoming an obsession for Democrats beyond California

My summary of this article in 5 words. Dems have no one else.

MickParticipantYouGov poll has Newsom at 23%, Harris at 18%, 8% at — get this, no misprint, I’m not lying — AOC.
One in 12 poll respondents think AOC’s the best choice. The good news — for Americans — is that she’s rumored to be thinking more about taking over for Chuck Shumer as NY Senator.

MickParticipantEmerson poll says that if JD Vance ran against Newsom, he’d be ahead 46% to 45%.
The August poll had Newsom behind by nearly 2%. So, Newsom is gaining ground.

MickParticipantCurrent poll claims Newsom is behind Harris for the 2028 Democrat presidential nomination.
Gavin Newsom suffers polling blow among 2028 Democratic candidates
Harris has support from 33% of Dems. Newsom is second at 13%, and AOC is third at 8%.
AOC as president…I can’t imagine a politically illiterate barkeep as our next president or citizens of any stripe too stupid to vote for her.

ParticipantWhat? A poll indicates Newsom is with a point of Vance, and a week later Harris way ahead of Newsom among dems? What happened in a week to make both of these true?

MickParticipantSmall sample sizes. Different polls.
FWLIW, the most accurate presidential political polls in both 2020 and 2024 was Atlas Intel. Their most recent poll was in mid-September. Here are their Democratic contenders:
- Newsom, 37%
- Harris, 21%
- Buttigieg, 12%
- Ocasio-Cortez, 11%
- Walz, 4%
- Beshear, Booker, 3%
- Shapiro, 2%
- Whitmer, 0%
Pritzker wasn’t mentioned in the poll as an option. Interesting.
For Republicans, it’s JD Vance with 55%. Otherwise, DeSantis (16%), Rubio (12%), Ramaswamy (6%). Haley, Cruz, Gabbard, Youngkin, Kemp, Kennedy Jr. not mentioned.

MickParticipantCBS polled California voters specifically about Harris and Newsom and whether they should run:
Voters have spoken, loudly, I would say.

Genuine RealistParticipantA little factoid about JD Vance that stops traffic:
Should be become President, which is certainly possible and maybe even probable, he will come from the most disadvantaged background of any President since . . . Abraham Lincoln.
I wouldn't give you two cents for all your fancy rules if, behind them, they didn't have a little bit of plain, ordinary, everyday kindness - yeah, and a little looking out for the other fella, too.

MickParticipantI don’t really want an individual with a 960 SAT score as my president. I don’t want Gavin Newsom for a hundred other reasons, but I don’t think he’s that bright.

MickParticipantEchelon poll from early October:
- Harris, 24%
- Newsom, 15%
- Buttigieg, 10%
- Shapiro, 5%
- Walz,5%
- Ocasio-Cortes, 4%
- Pritzker, 4%
AOC’s and Gavin Newsom’s chances of beating JD Vance in 2028—Polls
AOC would tie Vance at 34% each. Newsom would beat Vance at 36% to 32%. Quite a comment on the American electorate.
It’s going to be a loooooong three years…
