…and I’m not surprised. Newsom is a presidential hopeful, in the way that my labrador hopes to get at a steak. And he has a realistic chance of winning. He presides over the state with the largest base of technology companies, and a state with 1,350,000 residents of Chinese ancestry (per U. S. census bureau). Newsom is very liberal/progressive, and he’s one of the few American politicians who haven’t contributed to the increasing tension between the U. S. and China. I suspect that Xi views him as a useful idiot in the way that old Soviets viewed American lefties as useful idiots.

Of course he was welcomed by Xi. Newsom is there for a week, visiting Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong and Jiangsu. And as a return gesture, Xi has indicated that he may attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in San Francisco next month.

Jerry Brown and Arnold Schwarzenegger also visited China when they were governors.

He was also pictured in a BYD electric car. He awarded a $1B contract to BYD to deliver PPE at the start of the pandemic. Supposedly they delivered unusable masks.

Gavin’s California budget deficit is now a record $68 billion as tax revenues have cratered. The originally budgeted shortfall was $14.3 billion.
