Yes, Governor Newsom sponsored a bill killing junk fees. Yes, he signed it into law. And he just rescinded the portion of it that applies to restaurants.
Newsom’s U-Turn: California’s Junk Fee Ban Excludes Restaurants, Sparks Backlash (msn.com)
I hate those stupid fees. There used to be a wonderful restaurant in the Marriott in San Jose, Arcadia. It was a Michael Mina restaurant. Great menu, great build-it-yourself salads. I went in, had to park in the convention center, BUT…happily, they validated parking. Not a big deal, just $6, so it’s a “nice to have” versus a “must have.”
Mrs. Mick and I had a great lunch, they validated our ticket, we drove to the exit gate…where the attendant informed us that we needed to pay $6. Told the attendant I was confused…she pointed me back to the restaurant.
Yes, I’m that ornery. I go back to inquire, and THEN the maitre d informs me that the lunch parking validation “is only after you’ve been here for 90 minutes…then the validation starts.” Nope, no misprint. Argued to no avail, it was corporate policy.
Never went back, either to the hotel or to the restaurant. It closed permanently, just before COVID.
