Lots of companies have been fleeing California. Jelly Bellies, based in Fairfield, CA, are closing their corporate headquarters. 69 workers, jobs gone. Jelly Belly is a 157 year old company.Ferrara Candy of Chicago bought them in 2023 and told them they would at some point close the CA plant/headquarters.

Other California businesses shutting their doors include Ernst & Julio Gallo’s Ranch Winery (all 56 employees), former NFL head coach Dick Vermeil is closing his Vermeil Wines tasting room in downtown Napa, Annheuser-Busch closed its Fairfield, CA brewery and laid off all 238 employees.

Silicon Valley Bank’s annual wine report says U. S. wine industry revenue declined from $75.5 billion to $74.3 billion. Incidentally, I don’t know precisely how many Silicon Valley Bank employees lost their jobs post-SVB meltdown, but it looks like it’s between 3,500 and 5,000.

a couple of comments.   First, I was just in New Zealand for both work and pleasure.   Last season they left grapes on the vines because global wine consumption is down, and I heard various industry concerns repeatedly.   So the wine issue is not unique to California.

That said, my company is closing a plant in the LA area and consolidating into 2 campuses in the midwest and east.  LA area was simple the least attractive of the 3, with a huge tip of the hat to regulations.

Perhaps alcohol consumption will increase as we head into the dark economic times…  😛

Yamaha, which has been in Cypress, CA for 45 years, is moving to Georgia. Gone by 2028. All of it, and it is considerable.  25 acres.

Another Calif. company moves its HQ out of state, this time to Georgia
