Gavin Newsom is intervening in an ongoing federal court case barring San Francisco from cleaning up homeless encampments until more shelter beds are available. Says the judge has gone too far, and he hopes it goes to the Supreme Court.
Newsom has a big problem. He has ambitions for higher office, but his term as SF mayor was a major part of the reason that SF is a cesspool, and widely recognized as emblematic of what happens to a city when progressive politicians lead it. So Newsom has taken SF’s problems to heart — finally — because he knows the rest of the country doesn’t want to end up like San Francisco, and it will be a major roadblack to his ambitions.
