I think you have to be some special sort of incompetent for a sitting President to take over your police department. But the Washington DC Metroplex has had incompetent policing for many, many years.
Flashing back 45 years, in between getting kicked out of my Mom’s house, my Dad’s house and high school, but long before she became the Leftiest Lefty who ever Left the house and her Stanford PhD, my sister — who realized that she had zero discipline — decided to join the Army.
Because she was six feet tall and was an incredible athlete (her high school nickname was “Conan” and she could do 50 one-handed pushups), the Army rejected her request to be a journalist, and instead made her an MP and stationed her in Washington DC.
She told me some pretty interesting stories about that time period, how the Washington Metro police were lazy, incompetent and corrupt and how whenever anything serious happened (e.g., bank robberies), they would call the Army MPs. Sis, in fact, responded to two bank robbery calls, among other what would normally be civilian police issues.
For decades, she was part of the Defund the Police crowd, and wouldn’t consider voting for a Democrat because they weren’t Progressive/Liberal enough for her. At the same time, she vehemently objected to the amount of taxes she had to pay. No, she never completed the conversion to Republican, but let’s just say she’s awfully sympathetic to the “reduce-taxes” crowd.

Oh, now year over year stats matter. Blow out violent crime stats for four years, and then tout a one year drop? This talking point didn’t get any traction, so the media dropped it last week. Murders were not at a 30 year low. Per capita, they were still higher than every year before 2020.

It’s three days past the fascism talking point. Are you seeing widespread videos of police / National Guard brutality? No. Beyond the Subway sandwich throwing crowd, people are welcoming not having to worry about carjacking.

Those statistics are, in fact, manipulated. It’s a press release from the Washington DC District Attorney’s office.
The FBI’s statistics show that in the same time period, the total number of assaults, homicides, kidnappings, abductions and sex offenses fell in the capital from 23,914 in 2023 to 22,320 in 2024. That’s a 6.7% drop.
Nationwide murders and non-negligent manslaughter dropped 14.9% from 2023 to 2024.
Washington Metropolitan PD’s information shows the highest number of homicides since 2008. And this is at a time when crime in New York, California and Texas is dropping.

On a personal level, I’ve traveled late at night in many of the nation’s hot spots, including NYC, Philly, Detroit, and New Orleans. Never felt frightened there. Felt genuine fear on the Metro in Washington DC.

And while I am ranting, may I just say that I’ve spent a fair amount of time in DC’s Union Station. It’s actually not that bad, unless it’s really deteriorated in the last two years. Last I saw it, it was in pretty decent shape.
