ParticipantWhat in the Sam Hill are they thinking. It’s not enough to ban gas appliances in new construction, but now they want to ban repairs as well?
ay, caramba! Soon you will be able watch TV by candlelight. Won’t have enough power to turn on the TV and a light at the same time.

LegendKeymasterFirst they came for the high flow toilets and I figured I didn’t mind flushing three times per dump, so I kept my mouth shut.
Then they came for wood fireplaces and charcoal grills, but I didn’t have a wood fireplace and I grilled with gas so I didn’t say anything.
Then they came for the incandescent light bulbs, but I wasn’t into incandescent light bulbs so I didn’t say anything.
Next they came for the gas appliances, but I didn’t have any gas appliances so I didn’t say anything.
Then they came for my electric stove, heat and hot water, but I was too damned cold and hungry to say anything by then, so I moved out onto the street where hot food is served three times a day and warm blankets are handed out every night in SF.
Now, I love the government.

ParticipantWhen your plan is eliminating the use of fossil fuel, everything is fair game. propane grills are next.

ParticipantI’m in the Bay Area. I’m in the process of adding a gas line to my BBQ. Ironically, I just added a lot of solar panels (got 82.5 kWh today), but have no interest in an electric grill.
I’m agree some of these things are a bit much. But on the flip side there are some federal, state, and local rebates and tax credits that offset thousands of dollars. But at a minimum I think there should be waivers for low income people who can’t take advantage of the tax credits or pay for electric upgrades to their home. And probably the mandate in general should be scrapped. It should be a carrot and not a stick approach. If the tax credits and rebates aren’t enough to incentivize someone, then it shouldn’t be mandated.
I’m less worried about the grid, though (mentioned in the article) — at least long term when there are many home batteries that can act as a virtual grid from which the utilities can draw from as needed. I think they already have pilot programs going where they are paying homeowners for energy from batteries.

ParticipantNone of this makes any sense. Jenifer Granholm is a lawyer running our energy policy. She’s our go to girl on energy? I’ll bet if you asked her what the composition of the atmosphere was she would not know. I do know that CO2 is the mans source of plant food. If some places get warmer or cooler so what? Adapt. All of the Rube Goldberg stuff is absurd.
My solution, go nuclear.

rjnwmillParticipant“Jenifer Granholm is a lawyer running our energy policy.”
If only that was the full extent of her unfortunate placement. And by the way does she steal luggage as well?
The Secretary of Energy also has our nuclear weapons programs and our national laboratories in the portfolio. Granholm is, as you point out unqualified for the assignment.
I’d suggest that the administration is underperforming as a result of a foolish faux commitment to DEI hiring. Incompetence that checks a box in lieu of merit based hiring. However they’ve made it worse. No diversity of political opinion is included in the leadership group.
An organization that is intended to best serve an electorate that can be described as pluralistic will surely fail if the leadership is comprised exclusively of people whose policy preferences are so myopic. We see the outcomes of this shit for brains approach to governance every damn day.
Beyond the obvious failures of this leadership model, the stupidity is highlighted by what is seen daily when government failures are contrasted with successes by commercial organizations. The contrast is stunning. Commercial enterprises focus on serving diverse markets, serving individual market segments with carefully targeted messaging. As an example , over the last five years, racial diversity and gender diversity have been integrated into advertising and content decisions.
In contrast, our politics are designed to serve the self interests of the practitioners exclusively. And GR, Trump’s management style and messaging helped to bring this failed model into full relief. He was just as headstrong and self interested, perhaps more so. But he did it cards face up on the table for all to see. After Clinton & Bush & Obama, if we can ever escape this descent, it will in some measure due to his willingness to expose the failing, deceptive governance model.

ParticipantSay goodbye to most Asian food. Chinese restaurants rely on high BTU gas stoves to properly stir fry foods, and Korean BBQ and Yakitori joints will be gone. Also, it will likely reduce the amount of home cooking, resulting in people eating more processed food and making the obesity problem worse. But hey, there are negligible emissions gains to be had!
I agree on nuclear power. Because of the environmental activists in the 70’s the US fell behind in the nuclear power game. Russia and China are working on Generation 5 reactors. The US is decommissioning reactors (although Georgia recently had a new reactor go online, but it is a Generation 3+ reactor). Our grid, batteries or not, is a mess because of aging software and its infrastructure. Those problems aren’t going away soon.
