Mick1ParticipantHe’s sending a flunky in his place. Basically, Xi is done with the world order. Relations with the USA and most of the rest of the world have deteriorated, and Xi wants to establish a new order of friendlies, including Russia, Iran, North Korea, maybe South Africa (economically), maybe Brazil (economically). At the same time, they’ve alternately ticked off, infuriated and petrified their Asian neighbors.

It’s an interesting move for a country that is a net importer of both food and energy.

ParticipantHere is what the author doesn’t mention.
Xi looks around and sees US Troops in South Korea (25,000), Japan (55,000), Australia. Sees the nuclear armed 7th Fleet out of Japan prowling the South China Sea. Sees the hostile US alliance with Taiwan. Sees the stockpiles of nuclear weapons on Okinawa. Watched the never ending wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and now Ukraine. And sees in Washington leadership that is hostile to his country among many others.
My best guess is that XI is removing his country from a wildly unhealthy and unwinnable situation and is no longer going to play. He will look for other partners.

I hope that’s the case. Or maybe he’s figured that China has stolen all the intellectual property that it can steal…
