How stupid do they think we are, indeed. Fuel prices go through the roof, and then as they lower we get a “tax cut.”

The spin has turned to Joe “getting things done” and the pols touting the benefits of solar panel discounts and electric vehicle subsidies to a workforce that is getting slammed with inflation and the specter of a recession.
I’m getting older and have never noticed the cynicism of modern politics like I notice it now. All is theater for the election. “Inflation Reduction Act” is quite possibly the most cynical legislation name of all time.
Still, the wsj reports that beef prices are falling, and we know that fuel prices have eased somewhat. When 8+% inflation is somehow good news we know the press is in the bag for the Big Guy.

Any governor of california has the wind at their back. I think Gavin has wildly underperformed as a leader. He is a savvy politician but look who he is related to.

I have no opinion on AOC for president any more than I do on MTG for president. They both serve their political purposes.

Sic transit gloria mundi (so shut up and get back to work)Trust in media has fallen because “media” has gone from presenting topics that captured people’s interest for a few minutes at a time to driving “narratives” that exploit well-researched cognitive and biological ticks in the human mind to absolutely derail and capture the human psyche.
In other words, news media plays on prejudice and bias to capture eyeballs in perpetuity. It used to be people got their fill and went outside. Now people are captives to the narrative.
This is, of course, worse in some media than others.

The hyperbole around it is ridiculous.
Now, the framework updates for considering gun cases (the change to the “two part test”) might be very substantial, and that likely deserves some scrutiny.
overall the court played its role: it upheld an enumerated right even if ever so slightly (imagine if you had to be fingerprinted to post about the government on Twitter or to attend a religious service).

The sanitizing of community life into spiritless “identities” is part and parcel of the authoritarian existence. It used to be “man, I can’t stand those clowns in EBF but I might drop by their party.” Now it’s “I hope those clowns lose their house like we did.”
We’re just so much more of a loser culture. And don’t lecture me on how special Stanford students used to be vs now. Stanford students were interesting and fun because Stanford was interesting and fun. Now, I get the sense that it’s all management by the numbers and legal guidelines. What fun is that? Students are robots being groomed to find the next tech monopoly to exploit and donate funds back to the university.
Never thought I would say it, because I had an absolutely amazing time there, but I’m growing tired of Stanford.

First mind is that the deprive of due process, etc etc etc. They give a busybody the ability to basically ruin a person’s life for merely being weird. “I’m red flagging that guy for having an NRA hat on and getting angry at the cashier.”
Second mind is that some level of red flag exists in real communities. Making threats should lead to an investigation. I’m willing to listen to how you might bulletproof the process.
On juvenile crime records, they should absolutely be in NICS. It’s absurd that you get to be a delinquent up to 18 and the next day have no record.
I also believe that background checks a la NICS ought to be cheap and easy. Just have a website that you enter last name and Ssn on and it gives you a green dot or red dot. That would get rid of a lot of the Gun show loophole discussions.

Trump is almost exactly the opposite. Not pretty at all.
I’m not informed enough on what Trump actively did on Jan 6. I can tell you that when the sitting president attends a protest or rally, and the protest or rally gets out of hand, he has some responsibility no matter what. What I can’t abide is the “coup” or other nonsense. The guy was president. He wouldn’t have needed a bunch of fringe weirdos to do a frontal assault on the Capitol to accomplish a coup.
Jan 6 was an abomination that should never have happened in a civil society. But it was no reichstag fire or storming of the bastille. It was a protest that turned into a low level civil disturbance. Certainly it was nothing approaching the protests and riots against u.s. agencies in Portland and other cities during the prior year. No fires set, no significant graffiti, etc.. I mean, holy smoke, remember the CHOP? Jan 6 may have been the most respectful insurrection of all time.
All the Jan 6 noise is just to do what Trump’s second impeachment couldn’t do: make him ineligible to run again. The dem’s are terrified of that.
that said, I think the gop is better off leaving trump behind. You and I agree on that. However it’s important to remember that trump may go down as the most “American” president of the past 50 to 100 years. He was more like the average American than any exec, and that’s why people respond to him. Brash, aggressive, multiple wives, talks about banging young chicks, bankruptcies and debt…he’s way closer to Joe the plumber than any president ever and that’s saying something since he’s supposedly a billionaire.
