Totally agree. This article posits the idea that it’s really just a few years old. For me, it dates back to the “Me generation” of the 1970s, and possibly even further back to legislation making it easier for single heads of household. I grew up in a single-mom household. It was a living hell, genuinely awful. I wouldn’t wish it on anybody.
We don’t fund schools and teachers well, and haven’t for a long time. Federal tax deductions for children used to be extremely substantial, as society collectively recognized the fact that it was important to prepare for the future.
We haven’t done it since the 1970s which, according to a number of metrics, was the last generation that had it better than their parents. We’ve regressed ever since.
