<p class=”Component-root-0-2-61 Component-p-0-2-52″>Although she didn’t succeed, (defense attorney) Wade insisted that Holmes never stopped believing she was on the verge of a breakthrough that would realize her ambitions. Many investors thought she would too, one of the reasons that Theranos once was valued at $9 billion —- with half that amount belonging to Holmes.

<p class=”Component-root-0-2-61 Component-p-0-2-52″>“Failure is not a crime,” Wade said. “Trying your hardest is not a crime. A failed business does not make a CEO a criminal.”

I was one of the earliest skeptics about Holmes, back when there were plenty of True Believers. The company just didn’t make sense in terms of start ups with which I was familiar. That even caused some family friction.

That said, this whole process is way, way over the top. The circus has come to town. We have found our Witch. I wouldn’t have brought the case in the first place – just not that much societal gain – and would definitely have let her plead out.

It’s as if all the people that bought into what were clearly some very dubious claims now have to vindicate themselves by pummeling her.

I wouldn't give you two cents for all your fancy rules if, behind them, they didn't have a little bit of plain, ordinary, everyday kindness - yeah, and a little looking out for the other fella, too.
