China is holding rare earths hostage. They did this once before, versus Japan, in 2010, over a territorial dispute.

Trump wants to force rare-earths to be manufactured in the USA. He understands that we overrely on China for many items of importance. A senior Chinese official threatened to withhold lifesaving pharmaceuticals (while exporting fentanyl), so it’s not like the threat isn’t there.

We could have our own rare earths metals processing industry by 2026 if we start today, according to the expert quoted in the article.
