What I think most people fail to understand is that Trump is a salesman. It’s a weave (so to speak) of truths, half-truths and lies, all concocted to make a serious point. The reason Trump gets so much flack is because he is in politics, a profession that is dominated by lawyers — a profession that I’ve served from a unique perspective for the past two decades.
Lawyers, as a rule, rarely tell an out-and-out lie, and they don’t generally exaggerate. But as a group, they are extremely deceptive. They have to be, it’s the fundamental tenet of their business. They are trained in the Socratic method; first argue one side, then argue the other side, and do both convincingly and well. The only way to do it is to present one side of the argument (and completely omit the other side) and to offer the omst creative interpretation of a set of facts that supports your position.
Sometimes the lawyers and media will invent facts (see Russian collusion). Sometimes the lawyers and media will ignore facts (see Hunter Biden laptop and Hillary e-mail scandal).
See, this is why lawyers and the media identify with each other so well. Both have, fundamentally, the same approach. A journalist writes a story with an argument in mind, a specific angle, and will crowd all the supporting points they can into the article and omit all the points (or counterarguments) that fail to support their angle.
And this is why Americans don’t trust the media or attorneys. He is, as Dave Chapelle said on Saturday Night Live, an “honest liar.” It’s worth a listen. He mentions the moment that Trump not only states that the system is rigged, but proves it in a way that lawyers like Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton would never, ever, ever admit…but that we all know is true:
