New Mayor Lurie has his share of challenges. His predecessor, London Breed, was abysmal. DA Chesa Boudin, son of criminals, was functionally a criminal himself by decriminalizing drugs, theft and prostitution. The City’s confounding red tape to open a small business is Byzantine (61 separate steps for a restaurant). Crime. Homelessness. Squalor. Lack of affordable housing. $800 million budget deficit that could grow to $1 billion if federal funds don’t come through. And fentanyl deaths are still rampant, though down from 810 in 2023 to 633 in 2024.
