Regardless of who is involved, I’m Pretty sure the ship would have been harbor piloted through the canal, and so all responsibility falls to the pilot. I don’t know how the rules work exactly, but I thought the captain is absolved of grounding if the harbor pilot does it. Anybody know?

I lived at Miraflores Locks on the Panama Canal for a couple of years. They had a tug on each side guide each ship through the locks which had as little as a foot or two clearance each side. My understanding was that the ships were boarded long before the reached the lock by a Panama Canal pilot. I suspect they stayed on all the way to Colon on the Atlantic side and visa versa to Balboa. It was amazing to watch. I’d imagine the Suez is no different. The stakes are so high on those canals that I find it hard to imagine how the Ever Given screwed it up.
