I’ve spent a lot of time in Canada and with Canadians. Lovely people. Very kind. Kind of sound like Midwesterners.

I always thought merging Canada and the United States made no sense given their very strong countercultural currents. Would it make sense for the Canadians? Economically, sure. Otherwise, they’re too different. Maybe in 50 years. But they still see themselves as subordinate to the Brits, they like their insufficient national healthcare, they don’t have the power and optimism of Americans. I could go on.

Until the end of the month when an election will be called.  Trump’s loud support for tariffs and silly talk of making Canada the 51st state has reduced Pierre Poilevre’s once-over whelming lead over the Liberal Party.  i think he will win, but I must admit, I don’t know much about Carney.
