I think Chris Cristie’s about ten years past his sell-by date. He was such a breath of fresh air…I remember his early interactions with the press, just pristine response to a reporter’s aggressive questioning:

and with teachers. Mrs. Mick was a teacher, I’m sympathetic to teachers, but I really liked the way Christie interacted with teachers and their powerful unions.

Anyway, a bridge scandal and brief dalliance with Trump has affected Christie, and now he doesn’t have much of a chance, but I think he’s smart. Just not electable:

He wants a little extra cash through campaign contributions to fix his summer place after he withdraws.

“I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?" "Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet. You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times." It was all true what he was saying. And yet, I

Excellent article on Christie, by Peggy Noonan. Basic thesis is that if Trump gets the nomination, the Republican party as a political force is over. She thinks DeSantis is too limited. She’s very much interested in Christie’s candidacy and notes two positives and two negatives:

      1. He was a very good governor from a Republican standpoint. Capped property tax, limited spending, increased school funding but got more charter schools, won public employee pension reform with big Democratic majorities in both state legislative chambers and reformed Camden’s approach to policing.
      2. He’s politically gifted. He won re-election in 2013 by 22 points.
      3. Challenge: He hit his peak 10 years ago.
      4. Scandals: Bridgegate.
      5. National level politics: He led Hillary clinton in 2016, but only got 7% in New Hampshire

Peggy Noonan has become a cocktail circuit RINO with a sappy self-inulgent perspective who spouts cliche drivel.  If Chris Christie has any influence on the direction of the country, we are truly lost.

I don’t think he’s going to win, but I don’t mind him getting onto the debate stage and taking out, say, Marco Rubio. He’s funny, though.

I don’t think a lot of the criticisms of other candidates are landing from any of the candidates at this point. Those with affirmative messages seem to have the most momentum.

The problems are institutional. The Barr DoJ had evidence of Biden criminality since 2017.  They had the whistleblower report and 200 suspicious activity reports by independent banking institutions. They had the laptop since 2019. Yet DoJ didn’t step up to correct the record during the 2020 election cycle. Hell, these items remain open two and a half years after he left office.  If one thinks that it is important for the next president to completely reset the institutional priorities and upgrade performance, this is perhaps a tough record to run on?

When I look at the field, who can go balls out to clean out the swamp without engaging in personal retribution?  I don’t know. Trump failed in his first try. He gave us Sessions & Barr, a failed SoS and SoD. He was late pulling the trigger on Comey and then put in Wray.

Who else in the field might do better?  To the best of my knowledge, this topic is being discussed in the House, less so on the campaign trail…and the House seems to be flailing. We’ll see.

It might have to be attacks on Trump by committee, so to speak. DeSantis (and his wife) have been vociferous in their anti-Trump approach. Chris Christie is going after Ivanka and Jared (“the grift from this family is breathtaking”) and “That’s your money he stole – and gave it to his family. You know what that makes us? A banana republic. That’s what it makes us.”

Then you have his former VP, Mike Pence — who is not remotely presidential, by the way, maybe more than Kamala Harris, but not much more — who is more even-keeled, but still contrasts with Trump.

Meanwhile, RFK, Jr. is doing well in Dem polls, and concerning Dems. He is running against Biden:

Heard a clip from RFKJr talking about closing the border. Loved it.

Perhaps the best approach is to embrace most of Trump’s policies and attempts to drain the swamp, and base the campaign on “I’m like Trump, but without the baggage and the roadblocks from the Dems. I’ll get what needs to be done, done.” Somebody needs a lot of charisma to pull that off, and I don’t see it yet, though the few times I’ve seen Tim Scott, I’ve been impressed. Surprised that Nikki is getting so little attention.

Agree that Haley seems to be getting less attention than I had expected.  Love Tim Scott’s positivity, but hopefully he can mix in more hardcore policy specifics as he goes along.  DiSantis should try to smile more.  His wife is his personal connection to the electorate.  He is very articulate in explaining his policy goals.  And Vivek is my sleeper.  Maybe a great VP candidate w/ DiSantis.  A president-in-training!

How to rip a former President / current presidential candidate, by former Governor Christie:

He hasn’t won a damn thing since 2016. Three-time loser: 2018, we lost the House; 2020, we lost the White House; we lost the United States Senate a couple weeks later in 2021; and in 2022, we lost two more governorships, another Senate seat, and barely took the House of Representatives when Joe Biden had the most incompetent first two years I’d ever seen in my life.

Loser, loser, loser. Now we’re getting going. “It’ll be different this time?” Why? Why will it be different this time? Those arguments need to be made, and I’m not afraid to make them for two reasons. One, I’m not afraid of him. And two, it’s the truth.

Well Governor, hasn’t he won hearts and minds…you know, it’s sometimes called the Republican base?
