LegendKeymasterCan’t help but think that this is yet another instance of Trump rubbing the nation’s nose in laws it already has on the books.
He did it with DACA, which was an executive order that should have been legislated IMHO, and this is a similar instance.
I also can’t wait for us all to realize that “inhuman” treatment at the border is neither new under Trump nor all that inhuman when you dig into it.

Genuine RealistParticipantI couldn’t disagree more. Draconian enforcement of immigration laws has always been the biggest weak point of Trump’s policies. It has produced some cases among long settled immigrants, with families, that make no sense at all from any realistic human standpoint,
But the kids are worse. The issue isn’t going to go away, Trump doubling down on it just looks awful, and you can expect one wrenchin video after another. My bet is that his approval ratings are going to drop like a stone, despite the strong economy, and the Blue tsunami comes back on the table. It is just an incredibly dumb thing to do.
This article from Commentary – reliably conservative, but in its own fashion – suggests the devastation Trump is doing to his own party. He could not have called it worse.
I wouldn't give you two cents for all your fancy rules if, behind them, they didn't have a little bit of plain, ordinary, everyday kindness - yeah, and a little looking out for the other fella, too.

LegendKeymasterIt plays for headlines, but can someone here give me the alternative that does not include letting families pass into the country without detention?
I assume it means preparing family holding cells? I’m not against that, but it still belies the realities that the children are often with caretakers. What then?

cardcrimsonParticipantThe solution is easy. Don’t allow refugees at all. The left demanding Trump sign an executive order stopping the separation of families at the border. Sign an order that temporarily stops allowing refugee families from entering, while reuniting families already here. Make Congress do their job and actually pass a law.
Governing by executive order is awful. Executives determining which laws they want to enforce and not enforcing those they dislike is equally bad.

“I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?" "Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet. You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times." It was all true what he was saying. And yet, I

LegendKeymasterHah. And of course Trump capitulates, only to be faced with the fact that the executive order runs afoul of…the law.
You can’tmake this up.
