It is almost not possible to perform worse than Trump did tonight – petty, mean-spirited, argumentative, unable to adhere to the agreed protocol, wandering into constant irrelevancies, constantly interrupting himself.

All Joe Biden had to do was appear Presidential, which he did.

And which Trump did not. La commedia e finita.

Typical GR horseshit. I’ll go with Mark Levin’s Biden got away with endless lies and cheap shots. The questions were mostly asked from a left perspective (“the science of climate change,” what’s wrong with “critical race theory” training,” etc.) and Biden went unchallenged by the moderator far too often. For example, for months Biden was silent about the riots, he has no real plan for the coronavirus, he supports public funding for abortion, etc. I’d also be interested in seeing the time allocation as well as it certainly seemed to me that Biden had more time. The president had to force his way into the discussion at times, he was quite good on specifics and getting his issues into the debate. Biden unleashed repeated personal attacks, including resorting to name-calling, like “clown,” “racist,” “shut up,” etc. And Biden looked 10-years older than his 77 years. More thoughts tomorrow.:

“I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?" "Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet. You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times." It was all true what he was saying. And yet, I

Well, to call them ‘thoughts’ is generous.

When the other guy is supposed to have uninterrupted time, you give him uninterrupted time.  Even kindergartners understand that.

Then you have these long garrulous twisted sentences, endless self interruptions, etc.

The worst that can be said for Biden was that a couple of times he took the bait. But mostly he handled the provocations with quite a bit of poise and composure. He did well.

I heard an interesting opinion from a talking head.

Orange won because this is a base election. Trump fed his base all night. Biden was forced/obligated to walk away from the Sanders/Warren/AOC wing of the Democratic Party.  “I am the party.”  Watered down Green Deal. No single payer health care. No defund the police. Tonight, did Orange successfully suppress democratic turnout?

I hadn’t looked at it that way. To me, it is the only way to rationalize a Trump win in tonight’s theatre.

I heard the same thing.  Trump was all-base, all the time.  Biden was very much a moderate Democrat.  He did his best to distance himself from the left throughout the debate. He repeatedly denounced the Green New Deal — “no, I don’t support the Green New Deal,” he said — and referred instead to his own climate plan, which includes less aggressive emission reduction targets.

Early on, Biden said he was “not opposed to” Trump Supreme Court pick Amy Coney Barrett and that she “seems like a very fine person.”   Biden also went out of his way to make clear he opposes the calls from some left-wing activists to “defund the police,” and disputed a false claim from Trump that he supports Medicare For All, noting that he defeated its leading proponent, Bernie Sanders, in the primary.  The remarks were reflective of Biden’s larger strategy, which is not to bet the election on turning out young and progressive voters, but rather to bring seniors and college-educated whites with more moderate views into his coalition.  The question is whether Biden turned off enough progressives for it to matter during the election.

Trump was unprepared other than to come out swinging.  It was not pretty watching him carpet bomb over-smiling, smirking Joe.  Trump also looked bad in the first debate against HRC too.   Does anyone remember that debate?

Here’s my takeaway.  I vote for what’s in my own best interest first and I really don’t care about the vessel that delivers it to me.  I assume Biden is a cypher.  A daft place-holder.  He had a very low bar to hit and he made the cut and maybe even picked up some votes.  Biden made his case to voters on policy matters and I tried to listen very carefully. What I heard says to me he is not close to what I want.  It is inconceivable for me to vote for his plan.  And at least for last night, Trump failed to protect my interests.  The dust has cleared, nothing on policy has changed, and fearing for the worst I have to adjust.

I wonder how many Biden supporters have a put on him?  Think about that.

        Mick,

That’s a pretty cogent analysis. I am curious how all the formatting ended up visible. That stuff interests me.

It was as expected, really.  Biden only had to stay steady to get over a low bar. Trump was trump and looks like and probably is an asshole.

on policy, for me, it’s not even close. Trump all day. But damn what a jerk.

the only question, really is whether trump can keep the frustrated masses in flyover country enthralled. I’m not sure any more. The left’s constant bias seems to have worn him down to a more frustrated nub than I realized.

Last night there were 3 people on that stage one of which part of a cabal that tried to overthrow a duly elected President.  He was a lead participant in a coup.   The evidence is pretty damning now and probably half the country does not know it.  Biden is within reach of the Presidency and he is smiling at all of the suckers who will vote for him. He knows he’s going to get away with it.   The failure of Chris Wallace to pin him down was astounding.   This was his moment in history and he whiffed.  Biden was prepared for it I’m sure. It didn’t get off the ground.  Half of the viewers want to know what happened from the horse’s mouth.  Nothing.  Trump whiffed badly too.

It now appears that there is an even chance that like Lois Lerner and all of the Clinton people,  not one person will be held accountable for the Russia hoax,  Mueller Report, Fisa abuse, and impeachment.  Except General Mike Flynn.

One thing I took away from the debate, besides that both men are pathetic and Wallace is a weasel, is that Jill Biden looked truly terrified before the debate. The weasel even made an off hand comment about it in his opening (right before his “gotcha” questions to Trump and softballs to Joe). She seemed to fear for Joe’s capabilities. . . .

Not sure about strategy, but Trump did not win any suburban mothers back😁.

I try to avoid hyperbole, but a D sweep would be bad for the Republic.

Sean  Trende on RCP had an interesting take on the debate. Basically not your fathers Oldsmobile.

Maybe Trump wasn’t feeling so good… 😉 :yahoo:
