I’ve updated the list of businesses closing in San Francisco to include Nordstrom (all stores), Marshall’s and KPMG.

Theft is up 14.6%, auto theft is up 6%, and violent crime is up: 50% rise in homicide in January, and 27.3% rise in rapes. The SF robbery rate is 4.5x what the average city robbery rate is. And there were 806 overdose deaths in SF in 2023. 80% from fentanyl.

Mayor Breed is now allying with Republicans to toughen up on organized retail theft.

I suppose it was going to come to this. The owners of the now-closed Tarantino’s (opened 1946) and Fisherman’s Grotto (opened 1935) on Fisherman’s Wharf have filed suit against San Francisco, alleging that the City and Port of SF neglected its responsibilities to foment tourism by creating an attractive environment for the tourist industry to thrive. That, therefore, forced those restaurants out of business.

      Complaint is 144 pages long.

Sounds like the tenant has a legit shot with this case.  Maybe this will open the door for other similar lawsuits.

We can add the Fillmore Safeway to the list of closings. Technically, today is the last day, but there’s nothing on the shelves.

SF’s Fillmore District Safeway closes | Watch

They wanted to close it a year ago, but the city and “activists” pushed to have it remain open. Bordered by Fillmore, Geary, Webster and Ellis. Safeway said too many thefts, poor safety. Too bad. It was in an area with lots of foot traffic.

There are 14 remaining Safeways in SF. There’s a Mollie Stone’s about six blocks north, a grove street market about eight blocks south, and others. Tough for Fillmore.
