I’ll start with this.

    https://www.wweek.com/news/courts/2022/10/17/oregon-ranks-worst-in-nation-for-prevalence-of-mental-illness/#:~:text=Oregon%20ranks%20worst%20for%20%E2%80%9Cprevalence,higher%20than%20the%20national%20average.

    https://www.oregonlive.com/living/2013/05 why_oregons_suicide_rate_is_am.html

Sat with a couple of local River Patrol Officers at dinner last night.  According to them, suicides are under-reported.  They pull one suicide victim from the water every week, and they are only one of 4 teams that patrol the Willamette and Columbia rivers.

More to follow.  There is a lot here to unwrap.

I was all in until you got to “subsidizing”.  I don’t believe people will stop having children without a subsidy.  🙂

OK, I’m going to be an a’hole.  Why is the government subsidizing having children? I would ask a similar question about ALL tax credits and deductions.

Makes one wonder how voters evaluate performance.  From the polling, Democrats seem to view performance on political affiliation.  If the person is not Republican, by default he/she is doing a good job.

Compare unfavorable polling between Kevin McCarthy and Hakeem Jefferies.  McCarthy is 40% vs Jefferies 21% unfavorable rating. Both are close enough in the favorable polling to call it even at 21%.

I’m willing to bet 90% of voters 1) don’t know what either one does and 2) don’t even know who they are.

I’m certain Xi is worried about Blinken cancelling his trip.

Major piece of intel for the PRC.   They don’t need hypersonic missiles, just a few slow moving balloons to take us down.

    A different link –

    https://news.yahoo.com/seattle-fire-department-responding-historic-035200131.html

Seattle is cursed with leaders good at two things – spending money and pearl clutching.

“The underlying root causes that have resulted in the current overdose crisis are, unfortunately, not ones that will be reversed overnight. Structural factors, including lack of economic opportunities, social isolation, structural racism, criminalization of substance use disorders, housing stability, and stigma, are just some of the factors that will require long-term, systematic changes and resources at all levels, from federal to state to local.

    Sharon Bogan, Communications Specialist”

Great.  No short term solution, and long term “resources” (aka tax $$) will be required.  No promise that any thing will improve, only a promise to toss more money down a hole.

And now the Washington State Legislature is proposing a $250M program to bring police departments up to an “acceptable” level of staffing. Problem is, there aren’t enough qualified candidates plus there is no way to train them when they are hired.

The SJWs can’t connect the dots.  Three years worth of anti-police rhetoric, budget cutting and legislation protecting criminals, the chickens are coming home to roost.

How about enforcing existing laws?  I keep hearing about our broken immigration system. Nothing broken about it, except it has turned into a political football.

    1) Enforce existing immigration law.
    2) Grant amnesty to illegals entering before a certain date.  Not talking about citizenship, but providing a means to get illegals registered.  Any illegal not registered after a certain date will be returned to their country of origin if they are captured or detained by LE.
    3) No chain migration.
    4) Same rules for DACA.
    5) Illegals with a child or children born on US soil have an option of returning to their country of origin with kids or leave the kids in US, in foster homes or adoption.
    6) Illegals can apply for citizenship, with priority given to families who have been here the longest.

Oh – and don’t forget to build the damn wall.

God forbid a return to sensible fiscal policy.  Yellen wants Congress to raise the debt ceiling when she should point out the difficulty of keeping interest rates down when the Federal Gov spends money like a drunken sailor.
McCarthy is like an expensive new car with a dead battery. He’s a really good rainmaker but I’d prefer General Sherman for now. So I give McCarthy a down vote but I think weasels in somehow. I give the 20 rogue Republicans an upvote for having some stones. In the end there is no such thing as bad publicity so it’s pretty good theater for the Republican Party. Like to see another 50 votes or so just for something to do until the NFL playoffs.
You want Sherman and we have McClellan. At this point, McCarthy will be no more effective as Speaker than Joe Biden is as President. It would serve the GOP right if 5 members joined with libs and elected Jeffries as speaker.

McCarthy will be unable to lead.  He should step aside.

“It feels like Michigan is going to be a real opportunity to signal to the rest of the country what it looks like when Democrats are in charge,” McMorrow said.

Yep. It sure is. ‘You’ve got to deliver’: Democrats take charge in Michigan (clickondetroit.com)
No pressure.  If the rest of the country cares what it looks like when Democrats are in charge, California, Oregon and Washington are textbook examples.
We need to accomodate immigration. From many parts of the world. But our national interests should be the filter to determine who is let in.
We do,  over 1 Million legal immigrants per year. More than any other country.  This year there will be over 1M hopeful immigrants claiming asylum, when less than 5% will be granted.

Legal immigration laws could stand to have an update, but it won’t matter until officials become interested in upholding laws as they are written.

Surprising (at least to  me) USSC orders Title 42 to remain in place.

Supreme Court orders Title 42 border restrictions to remain in place

The policy has drawn fierce criticism from immigration activists, who say the policy is cruel and inhumane.  Cruel and inhumane?  IMO, it is cruel and inhumane to not discourage potential immigrants from hiking 2000 miles with the hope of entering the US illegally.
