ParticipantUS wine market is $109b annually. Canada boycotting US wine growers isn’t that big of problem. Not mentioned in the article is rapidly expanding wine production in Canada, so some of fall off is just “buy at home”. Sort like what happened to French wine after 1976.

ParticipantIt seems strange trying to explain to others who argue SS is not an entitlement that SS fits the precise definition of an entitlement.
It’s tough sledding to sustain SS when there is no honest discussion in play to fund/preserve it.
Here is my plan.
1. Increase SS tax from current level to 14.4% over the next 10 years. That’s a 1 % increase for employees and employers.
2. Eliminate the SS contribution salary cap. If the cap is not eliminated, increase it substantially – like $500k.
3. Eliminate income tax on SS benefits, but phase out what you can draw based on your retirement income. As an example, you are eligible to collect 35K in SS and you collect $100k in retirement benefits from your 401(k), IRA, Union retirement plan – what ever. The $35k is not taxable income and does not affect your tax bracket. Over $100k in retirement, SS is reduced on a sliding scale until your retirement income reaches x, at which point you are no longer eligible to receive SS retirement benefits. Point here is to reduce benefits for those who don’t need them.Beeg_Dawg
ParticipantOh goodie. She’s going to make a run for the WH. I’m sure she will have NO problem lining up donors with deep pockets.

ParticipantColbert has lost 30% of his audience in the last 6 years. Sure he is number #1 in late night TV, but late night TV overall is in the decline.
A question my liberal acquaintances can’t (more likely refuse to) answer – Your decision to make, how long would you let the show lose money before cancelling?

ParticipantBut it’s part of a pattern in recent years of lawmakers, mainly in Republican-led states, undercutting or working to roll back voter-designed measures to enshrine abortion rights, expand Medicare and raise the minimum wage.
There’s some unbiased reporting. Not.
Washington somehow finds a way to overturn voter approved initiatives on a routine basis. Just another day in the office. $30 car tabs is one example, roll back green house gas taxes is another.
This is more grandstanding by Newsome. Anything will fly in a blue state if it is presented as anti-trump. WTF cares what Texas does? Looks more like petty grandstanding than leadership.

ParticipantOh please. Any mention of a pardon by Trump or his inner circle would mark a significant shift. Mawell’s legal team has an appeal headed to the USSC.
Trump reportedly considered a pardon during his earlier presidency, his team advised him against it due to the potential political backlash. Unless I am mistaken, isn’t Trump’s DoJ asking the court to unseal Grand Jury testimony? If the testimony reveals evidence Trump was party to Epstein’s pedophilia, a pardon becomes moot.

ParticipantIn his farewell address, Washington warned against the dangers of concentrated power and the potential for tyranny if a president were to remain in office for too long. Washington was of course referring to the presidency, but the same rationale applies to all elected officials.
Since the late 1800s, once elected to Congress you have a 90% chance of winning re-election.
I’m in favor of an amendment that caps the age for running for any federal office. Older than 75 seems like a good spot. Potentially you could serve in the Senate until reaching 81. Seems like a good place to cap the age of federal judges as well.

ParticipantWho carries the Republican banner in 2028?
Vance
DeSantis
Sanders
Abbot
Rubio
Hayley
KempVance and Rubio will have to figure out a way stay just close enough to Trump’s policies to claim them as their own if they economy improves. Ending the Ukraine Russia conflict won’t hurt.
It would be fun to watch Newsome run on his record. Outside of liberal strongholds, Newie would be as polarizing as Harris. He will pivot to the middle, alienating leftists, but won’t be able to convince conservative voters he has moved on from his socialist agenda.

Participantmeh. 🙂
An attractive young lady interviewed for an admin job (20 years ago.) I thought her email address looked like a web address. Yep- Full on lingerie model.Fortunately, she disqualified herself by answering her cell phone a second time after I asked her to turn it off during the interview.
Thinking back to my first office job in ’73, micro minis were a thing. 🙂

ParticipantThe reader comments are priceless.
Kamala running and probably winning will be the final nail in the West Coast’s coffin. I say west coast because it is hard to discern one entrenched left liberal super majority from another. I believe there is a weekly conference call between governors of Cali, OR and WA to exchange creative ways to milk taxpayers.

ParticipantMick, your story reminds me of the baseball strike in 94.
Young Dawg (10 at the time) was talking to his grandfather about the strike. His question – that grandpa couldn’t answer – was players make a lot of money. Why do they need more?

Participant“It’s hard to see the difference between this policy and what you’d get if a bunch of 10yos locked the teachers in a closet and rewrote the rules.”
I’ve got 8 yo granddaughters, and they object to you baseless and unfounded characterization. They would laugh at this, stating it looks more like summer vacation than school. Of course, mom is a public school principal.

ParticipantMy dining and living room are the most under utilized rooms in the house. I could board up access to those rooms and never miss them, about 800 sq ft.
Looking at median home prices, cost per sq ft has not gone up that much since 1970. Median home price in 1970 was $24,400 for a 1500 sf home. CPI adjustment puts that home at close to $205k today. Today’s median home is 2200 sf, with a median sell price of $420,000, or roughly $190 sf.
These are not typical California or any west coast metro numbers, but it shows home prices may not be as crazy as they seem. New construction on that 1500 sf home today gets you $285k, which is not surprising when factoring in permits, fees etc.

ParticipantSomeone should burn in hell for this. Starting with Jill Biden. Of course the dems will say it wasn’t the first time a first lady was calling the shots.
