Mick1ParticipantIn a normal society, that subterfuge would be criminal. It still should be. He still holds the keys to the kingdom.
Not sure if this is an adequate explanation, but I’ve noticed that American politicians no longer attempt to prevaricate or explain a particularly nefarious position. They “rag-doll” the issue, literally just go limp and don’t respond. James Bennett, senior editor for the New York Times, who called out the NYT for getting a lot of things wrong about Trump and other conservative causes — demonstrably, embarrassingly wrong — and the editor felt, quite strongly, that the NYT should apologize for their shoddy, inaccurate reporting and outright lies and caving to the woke mob. He was fired.

Mick1ParticipantUnfortunately, no one seems to care about the national deficit/national debt any more. It’s past WWII levels, expressed as a percentage of GDP. We’ll get through the next four years, then it will be the next prez’s problem.
I had an Econ prof who routinely dismissed the national debt, frequently saying that “as long as we owe it to ourselves (Americans), then it’s not really an issue.” Foreign countries own $7.9 trillion, about 22.9% of the national debt.
Now it’s a problem. Here’s the rough distribution, as of 8/1/24:
Japan ($1.1 trils.), China ($750 bils., down from $1.25 bils. in 4/14), UK has nearly $700 bils., up from $180 bils. in 4/14), Luxembourg about $375 bils., Canada about $325 bils.
On the good news side, the percentage of foreign ownership of our debt has been decreasing. It was $8.52 trillion in 2021 (adjusted for inflation).
Here’s a handy link where you can check the amount by country:

Mick1ParticipantI could not disagree more. Trump the Bogeyman is the only thing holding the DEMOCRATIC Party together, since Obama and Hilary abandoned the working class and turned it over to academic liberalism a decade ago. Without Trump, they’d go down on transgender issues alone – and that’s just for openers. I’m not going to be casting a Presidential vote in this election.
Interesting perspective, GR. I definitely thought that way about MSNBC, CNN and the variety of left-leaning media…I didn’t think to include the Democratic party itself.
Actually, I think the effect is worse if Trump wins. If he wins, then MAGA will have four years to be implanted. It’s not sustainable without Trump and the Electoral College advantage. If he loses, that would reduce, if not eliminate the influence of the MAGA crowd. If he wins, it would cement their unsustainable influence.
My Mom generally feels that the Repub and Dem presidential candidates are awful (I do, too) and she usually votes for the Green candidate. I asked her if she was voting for Jill this year, she says she probably will. Personally, I’m tired of voting against people, I’d rather vote for someone. I liked Nikki Haley, and I’m a bit surprised that Trump didn’t take her on as VP (as I’m surprised that Harris didn’t take on Shapiro) …it would have sewed up the election for Trump, much as Gov. Shapiro would have sewed up the election for Harris.
Says something about our political system that two “real” politicians are cast aside in favor of the two candidates on the ballot.

Mick1ParticipantMrs. Mick graduated magna cum laude from our alma mater with a degree in Finance and she loves the guy. She likes to have political discussions in public with liberals and progressives. Her style is more prosecutor than liberal…she asks questions that libs and progs can’t answer until they’re wriggling in the grip of reason, so to speak.

Mick1ParticipantExcellent thread. The supply chain is so fragile, every part is important, and it’s easy for the political party in charge to forget about taking care of the flyover people…kinda stunning how they used to be the backbone of the Democratic party and now the Dems have largely forgotten them.

Mick1ParticipantAccording to Nate Silver, Harris leads in swing states PA, MI, WI and NV. Trump leads in AZ, GA and NC.
At the same time, the polls are moving in Trump’s direction in AZ, PA, GA, MI, and WI and the trend is going Harris’ way in NV and NC.

Mick1ParticipantAnd speaking of joblessness and jobless claims, new jobless claims increased by 6,000 to 225,000, “beating” the estimated 221,000. Last year’s claims at the same time were 216,000, so this year’s claims have increased 4.2% over last year’s claims.

Of note, the demographics of the survey were:
Registered Democrats, 35.9%
Registered Republicans, 31.5%
Independent voters, 32.6%

Mick1ParticipantThis could easily be an October surprise in favor of Trump… proof that Biden and Harris don’t give two shits about hillbilly white people. I don’t think the GOP is strong enough to do it, and Trump will make a mess of it by making it us vs them racially.
Biden and Harris finally headed to North Carolina, after 182 dead. Will be in Georgia and Florida today.

Mick1ParticipantI think voters are figuring out that Kamala Harris is woefully unprepared and temperamentally unsuited to the Presidency, at least in PA.
Kamala Harris Loses Advantage in Critical Battleground State
More on PA. Older voters don’t like her:

BTW, we’ve all read about the devastating effects of Helene and the impact it has had in Blue and swing states, the slow to nonexistent reaction by FEMA and the fact that neither Biden nor Harris has visited the region. The hurricane’s aftermath is going to persist long after the election…and it’s not a good look that Biden clearly prefers the beach:
