It’s definitely a possibility in an era where some politicians would murder their own parent if it led to the other side looking bad; but it’s not at all an outcome we should be happy about as a country.

A skilled politician will tell you that default might actually be a wake up call to the problem of debt outgrowing GDP by leaps and bounds; but it’s not exactly the right kind of wake up call.

First off, yes Catholics are for some reason fair game for discrimination and ridicule.

second, this seems like much ado about nothing.

    Good read.

Generative AI is actually pretty amazing if it’s based on facts. It is terrifying that it may be steered by humans with bias.

That said, the first time the AI recommends for instance sterilizing everyone living below the poverty line we will see real regulation of it. Factual but cruel and inhumane, just like most raw arguments.

The contrast to Trump is very interesting at this point in the presidency. People quickly forgot that Trump was well neigh unbeatable right up until March 2020 and the George Floyd riots. The Dems embraced the covid death cult and the mostly peaceful rioters to smear Trump and that was only for the home stretch before the election.

In other words, a lot can happen in a short amount of time.

Personally I think Biden could lose his mind completely within the next 18 months. He has deteriorated so much in 2 years he can’t even take questions, and everybody knows it.

I guess the answer here is that treating transgenderism as any other healthcare issue for a minor means that it’s “too late” if the parents don’t consent to the castration and/or mutilation?

    Makes sense.

This will be chalked up to a bunch of troglodytes being “anti trans” but the reality is mulvaney is a good example of a scary phenomenon:  really demented, deviant people getting a lot of publicity for “being” a certain identity, but in reality exploiting that identity by just being bad/weird/controversial.

Mulvaney acts like a little girl. If she were not trans he would be just really weird.  Because she is trans it comes off as abhorrent to a lot of people. Literally she is a grown male acting like a 9 year old girl.

How the marketers think it’s a good idea to attach to such mental illness is beyond me. I have a core belief that the internet rewards bad. The badder you are the more clicks you get because you will arouse intense reaction.  Mulvaney is just bad.

So, you are a woman now. Go ahead, take the W but don’t press into the realm of creepy craziness and expect no hatred.  That’s not anti trans, it’s defense of actual healthy norms and culture.

I’m not that old, but sometimes I feel old. This is one of those times.

I never thought I would see a world where NOT allowing your kid to chemically and physically alter their body could be considered child abuse.

Stanford would never punish the hecklers… the hecklers have become Stanford’s customer and audience.  It used to be that professional schools served the profession and helped weed out the bad aspirants. Now?  Show me the money.

This whole episode has Stanford looking like a compromised institution.

    I get a dead link.

You want a good microcosm of “free thinking” that does relate to Bari Weiss?  Look at how Matt Taibbi has been treated since working on the Twitter files.  You would think he is Rush Limbaugh based on the Dem reaction, and reality is he has been left-leaning for years.

I’m frankly embarrassed and distancing myself from all things Stanford presently.  I do plan to attend homecoming this fall but that’s about the half dozen or so friends I keep up with from Stanford and not about the institution.

I’m not for a bailout. The moral hazard aspect is already a huge problem. As I look at the press releases, it looks like the bank is/was solvent and so I would hope a lot of the uninsured deposits should be recovered over time.

I wonder if the receivership certificates are tradable.

in reply to: What next. SF to ban repairs on natural gas appliances #6920

First they came for the high flow toilets and I figured I didn’t mind flushing three times per dump, so I kept my mouth shut.

Then they came for wood fireplaces and charcoal grills, but I didn’t have a wood fireplace and I grilled with gas so I didn’t say anything.

Then they came for the incandescent light bulbs, but I wasn’t into incandescent light bulbs so I didn’t say anything.

Next they came for the gas appliances, but I didn’t have any gas appliances so I didn’t say anything.

Then they came for my electric stove, heat and hot water, but I was too damned cold and hungry to say anything by then, so I moved out onto the street where hot food is served three times a day and warm blankets are handed out every night in SF.

    Now, I love the government.
