ParticipantOne should be angry after reading this. My reaction – going on 3 generations after after the Civil rights act, the best tool we have for fighting racism is more racism?
Of course, university leaders where unaware of these hiring practices and have instituted corrective and disciplinary actions.
And I have a bridge in Brooklyn for sale.
I’m sure no one will be charged, fined or even loose their job over this. That said, you can imagine the outrage if the same hiring methodology was used to exclude minorities and hire only white candidates.

ParticipantWhat is the dem’s strategy here? Wait for the GOP to unravel? Hope voters will flee from Trump? Pray that Hillary stays on the sideline?
Biden won’t stand up to a tough campaign, and I don’t believe voters will let him get away with fireside chats moderated by Karine Jean-Pierre.

Dems can’t afford to loose votes in a lot of states. It would not require a big shift in votes to swing the WH back to Republicans.

ParticipantRecent experience has ICU cost at $650/hour. Figure in and out over 3 months, your friend gave you a pretty good estimate.
Here is a surprisingly balanced piece from NPR. https://www.npr.org/2021/06/18/1007022652/oregons-pioneering-drug-decriminalization-experiment-is-now-facing-the-hard-test
Measure 101 was sold to the voters that it would improve access to treatment. Access to treatment was not a problem. Getting people to treatment IS the problem.
Oregon policy makers develop programs based on the premise drug addicts are just like everyone else, the only difference is a dependency problem. That might be true, but the numbers don’t lie. Our current methods of treating addiction are not working.

Interesting twist. Didn’t know that sellers will often get stock paying buyers reality fee. Looks like double dipping too me.November 1, 2023 at 3:02 pm in reply to: Greta Thunberg and her ilk owe the Baby Boomers an apology #7887Beeg_Dawg
ParticipantBig difference between showing up at a rally waving a sign and rolling up your sleeves and WORK.
Question for all millenials – What are you willing to sacrifice to save the planet?

ParticipantBut Bidennomics is working! Karine Jean-Pierre said so, it must be true.

Participant
I’m guessing you don’t write for Colbert?
Now that’s funny. Colbert would be off late night TV if not for Trump. Trump provided a lot of folder for Colbert, which he fed to his audience with equal portions of hate and vitriol.

Participant“He said they were all academics and look at data all day. It’s all they do. Housing was someone else’s problem.”
This IS the problem. Decisions made in a bubble, with out regard to the ripple effect of those decisions. Makes one wonder if looking at data all day makes for better decision making.
IMO, the Fed should be embracing a greater role in policy making. Lord knows the idiots in the WH can’t even spell policy, let alone formulate one.

ParticipantAnd just like that, walls now work. 🙂

ParticipantHow many times in the last 10 years have heard the phrase “For the first time in the history of the Republic……”
McCarthy should have never agreed to the motion to vacate rule. You could see the handwriting on the wall.
Dems demonstrated how they are willing to reach across the aisle to get things done. Right to the point of double screwing the ones who compromise when offered the opportunity.
I can’t imagine a more toxic work environment than Congress.

Participant
Homelessness has become so severe in California that the state now has more than 1/4th of America’s homeless (28%) and more than half of America’s unsheltered people (51%). Homelessness in CA 2020 Numbers.pdf The problem is exacerbated in the large cities. It’s reached the level that even Democrats realize that their policies have exacerbated a challenging problem.
The only policy I am aware of is to keep throwing more money at the problem and expect wonderful things to happen. Of course, pointing out how much money is spent on the homeless will draw the wrath of do gooders who believe the problem is caused by Republicans. 🙁
Portland and Multnomah County have a Joint Office for Homelessness. It has come underfire by an independent watch dog group for sloppy accounting, failure to pay suppliers on time, lack of policies and procedures and four directors in the last 2 years.
Here is an article that details the problems. https://www.opb.org/article/2023/08/23/joint-office-homeless-portland-audit/ Similar story in Seattle.
Locally, the budget for fighting homelessness is $265M/year. Portland’s homeless population is estimated at 5000. It would be cheaper to just buy a house for each of them.

Participant
I wish I could articulate our national energy policy. I don’t think it’s doable.
It’s not doable because we don’t have an energy policy.

Participant“‘If you want peace – fight until you win,’ he said. ‘If you want a long and strong peace, bury the hatchet on the territory of the enemy along with him.”
Gee, a general who understands what the military is supposed to do. Betting there is no transgender handbook in his library.
